Disagreement is not disparagement.

The NABJ has played an important role in my career and in the careers of countless Black journalists. I would not be sitting at @theculturetablepodcast today without relationships I built through that community. When I first met Stephen it was at NABJ. He went out of his way to meet with me at the convention in Chicago two years ago, and after several auditions it ultimately led to this opportunity.

But the NABJ community did not collectively vote to condemn Stephen A. Smith. A very small group of leaders made that decision, and we have every right to question it the way any journalist would.

Black journalists do not all think the same. Black women do not all think the same. And an organization that champions diverse perspectives should leave room for disagreement.

There will be people, including some Black women in media, who I will not name, but if you pay attention you will see who is still pushing this narrative that Stephen A. has a pattern of disparaging Black women because it generates clicks for them, and reinforces an ideology they are trying to spread to take him down. It’s disappointing. But repeating a narrative doesn’t make it a fact. Feelings are not facts, and disagreement is not disparagement.

I’ve spent years in the news industry. I know negative headlines generate attention, and everyone wants a bite when there’s controversy. That’s why context matters.

I’m grateful for what NABJ has done for me. I’m also comfortable disagreeing with its leadership when I believe they got something wrong.

In our new episode we were not just all sticking up for him, we kept it real with him, and asked him hard questions.

My friends and family that know me, know that I struggle with serious anxiety. It shows up in every big moment of my life, I worry about things that haven’t even happened, and it’s always at its peak when I am not the one who has control over the situation. But somehow I have always executed through it.

Anyways, last night I was praying before bed and this prayer showed up in my bible app at 1:39 a.m., Matthew 6:34 and it woke up a very important reminder that I know God wants us to all have.

“Don’t be anxious about anything, but in prayer make your request known. & God will show up in the hard times when you need him”

Yall know that no matter what I’m that friend that’s going to remind us to pray before we eat, pray in hard moments, good moments and I always share stories bravely about God’s hand in my life. So this perspective isn’t new to my friends & family but it might be new for any new followers or current ones that may not know my vibe around these things! I’ll share more moments that I think can help yall the way it’s helping me, more perspectives, and the journey I’m on!

I hope this encourages you to choose hope over fear more than yesterday. I’ll also be trying to take my own advice too lol.🫶🏽🙏🏾 by @toricooper
