April 30, 2025 - Denim Day

TW

This marks my fifth year of publicly advocating for sexual assault survivors and fighting against rape culture. I have learned many valuable lessons through this journey, with thanks to my support system and the brave individuals who have shared their stories with me. Whether you have a story of your own, or know someone who does, these testimonies prove why we need to keep having these conversations. In these five years, here are the five lessons that have impacted me the most.

  1. Every story of assault deserves to be heard and validated. Listen with empathy and no judgement because every person’s truth matters. Belief is the foundation of healing and knowing they’re not alone.
  2. Consent is more than a one time “yes” - it’s an ongoing, informed conversation about boundaries and respect. Starting these talks early and often helps prevent harm and normalizes clear communication in all relationships.
 3. Recovery and healing has no set timeline or “right” path. Patience, self-compassion, and choosing the support that feels right to you (therapy, peer groups, or creative outlets) are what truly matter. Choose when and how to share your story, so you lead the narrative rather than reacting to it.
  4. Rape culture is still deeply rooted in our society. You should not be afraid to call out jokes or comments that normalize or excuse assault, or hold others accountable when they downplay or ignore harm.
  5. Every voice matters. Advocacy is a collective effort - speaking up, listening, donating, or sharing resources takes us a step forward in the right direction. Together we can normalize these conversations to create a safer and respectful community.

If you would like to take action, please consider donating to Peace Over Violence’s campaign. I am grateful to have a space to be transparent and let others know they are not alone and that it is okay to use your voice. Today, I wear jeans alongside other survivors, spreading awareness and supporting victims of sexual assault. Thank you for listening to my story year after year. 💙

Consider how survivors are seen, questioned, and reframed. Society is quick to build narratives about people based on clothing, behavior, appearance. One’s reflection can become a constructed version of themself, one that gets judged, questioned, or misunderstood. But the truth is always more complex than what’s framed. Survival isn’t only about being seen, but deciding how you are seen.

Denim day began as annual campaign after a 1999 Italian Court overturned a rape conviction, stating the victim must have given consent if she was wearing tight jeans. This sparked outrage and women of the Italian parliament began wearing jeans in solidarity. This day encourages people to wear jeans to raise awareness, and educate individuals on rape, sexual violence, and victim blaming.

Please consider taking action and donating to Peace Over Violence’s campaign. Your donation supports services for sexual assault survivors: free counseling, hospital accompaniments and advocacy, support groups, legal services and a 24 hour hotline. Donations also support internationally-distributed educational materials, ensuring to keep sharing the message that there is no excuse and never an invitation to rape.

Today, I wear jeans alongside other survivors to support victims of sexual assault. 💙

In 1999 an Italian Court overturned a rape conviction, stating the victim must have given consent if she was wearing jeans. This day now encourages people to wear jeans to raise awareness, and educate individuals on rape and sexual assault. I shared my story three years ago, and I will continue to do so. Today, I wear jeans alongside other survivors of sexual assault and to spread awareness and support victims of sexual assault.

No one should feel isolated or alone in the things they go through. Since sharing my story I’ve noticed more and more people are finding the strength to talk about theirs. We are slowly breaking the stigma about these conversations and fighting against rape culture. Whether you feel it or not, there is so much support around you. All I could hope is that the love and support I’ve received can be spread to other survivors.

If you would like to take action, please donate to Peace Over Violence’s campaign. Your donation supports services for sexual assault survivors: free counseling, hospital accompaniments and advocacy, support groups, legal services and our 24 hour hotline. Donations also support our internationally-distributed educational materials, ensuring that we keep sharing the message that there is no excuse and never an invitation to rape.
