Last October the Mackenzie received roughly 250mm (10in) of rain in less than 24 hours. That amount of rain put the Tasman River at flood levels.

Normally the 90% of the iceberg underwater gets caught at the river mouth, but high river levels resulted in sizable icebergs tumbling down the river. I watched as this iceberg tumbled down the river then became lodged against rocks on the river bottom allowing me a few moments to capture a long exposure before it dislodged.

We’ve been in quite the aurora drought lately.
So I got creative and made this composite from the Mother’s Day aurora in 2024 blended with the clay cliffs.

The approaching storm front yesterday brought with it very dramatic skies!

Mammatus clouds are a rare example of clouds formed by sinking cold air rather than rising warm air. These clouds are mostly made of ice crystals and water droplets. As cold air sinks downward into pockets, warm air rises up around them creating these pouch-like shapes.

I chased this impressive storm from Twizel to Tekapo. I captured a panorama of the sky and then captured the church and blended the shots together to create this final piece of art. I was pretty surprised to be at such an iconic location with no other photographers around, I suppose the angry weather discouraged a lot of tourists. Hope you enjoy my efforts!

A massive basal calving event filled the Tasman Lake with millions of tonnes of icebergs!
I’ve never seen so much ice choking the lake full!
Flying over the lake is quite impressive but the true magnitude of it is viewed from the shore.
