my decision to not celebrate “thanksgiving” is my personal act of resistance and standing in solidarity with the people native to this land i live on, who endured unfathomable physical, cultural & mental violence. i continuously challenge myself to learn more about indigenous people and their history. i refuse to be complicit in and brainwashed by oppression. and i will not raise my children to just go along with the “norms” and traditions that are rooted in the destruction of their people or any people. these decisions i make for my babies & i aren’t the easiest. i get a lot of backlash from loved ones. and i get this is an opportunity to gather for quality time and “giving thanks” for the things we are grateful for in our lives (??????), but i can’t separate the history of massacres from the celebration. we usually do go to family’s houses, eat, and enjoy ourselves, but also do make it a point to spend a chunk of time talking and learning about indigenous people’s experiences. this year’s different. my heart is heavier than usual. i’m a little more enraged than past years. feeling extra anti-thanksgiving this time around. and i wish my choices were more respected, understood, and better received.
