so it turns out i am heading into my 10th year (oof) of producing & engineering records in new york city. when i was maybe 20 my band in college went into a real studio for the first time and i remember being floored by the realization that the person sitting at the console’s job, every day of their professional life, was to work with artists to turn the sounds they were hearing in their heads into recordings people could listen to forever. it’s a thrill i am still not over - i love it more than anything and i can’t fully believe i get to do it every day.

anyway, i made a not-exhaustive playlist of some favorites from the last decade. most songs on here i produced, although there’s a handful that i just mixed or just recorded or co-wrote… endless gratitude to the folks who have trusted me with their art over the years, it has been a pleasure working with you 😌

happy thursday! today we’re doing a couple ideas to get started with drum room mics. there are million options beyond these and every room/situation/piece of music is different - use your ears and don’t be afraid to try stuff! got any favorites the community should know about?

a drummer friend (jokingly) told me to stop giving away all my tracking secrets, but the reality is that this is entirely self serving - if you’re going to record your own drums and then have someone else mix (especially if that person is me), please please please make sure your snare mic isn’t just a hi-hat mic and your tom mics aren’t just cymbal mics 🙃 polar pattern and positioning are your friends!!! there’s a reason I own 3 Beyer M88s and 0 SM57s

more on drum recording! seemed like the logical bridge between single-mic and bigger setups to talk about a couple classic minimal setup ideas. also trying to honor my heritage by talking with my hands (a)more 🤌

considering doing a series on drum recording - is that of interest to folks or nah? also recommend listening in headphones for the audio examples because they all sound pretty much the same on an iPhone speaker haha
