Because of the heatwave and the impossible temperatures in my snug rented studio I have had to shift modalities from rendering big to working small and portable. There is a beautiful quiet meditative state that comes from stitching slowly, working with soft colours. A bit of gentleness which I currently need. Therefore more little painted and stitched abstracts. I have 4 good piles of slightly differing hues. The process is the same. And the layering of a randomly cut sheer a top gives me a little challenge and poetry…
Recently I came across a YouTube video featuring an American potter, Jennifer Owen, who teaches, and creates in Hawaii whose premise is “ambition (as an artist) can be a trap.” Better to pay attention to your art and the creative process. No one will deny wanting to be successful or recognized but truly focusing on the work is paramount. We measure so much now by commodifying or monetizing our output. I feel successful just getting the work done, pursuing the need to create, to render, to be present, to pay attention. I can’t worry if soso hasn’t acknowledged my work. I just can’t. There is a hugely important phenomenon in paying attention and immersing oneself in the work come what may- life is simply too short and precious. #tornedgesstudio #studioprocess #textileart #artasmeditation #abstractartwork by @tornedgesstudio

My little painted textile scraps now being layered by light reflecting, colour dimming, surface altering synthetic organza gifted to me months ago by my friend Erin G. This particular approach to thinking about light reflecting through the use of a transparent layer is inspired by Japanese artist Yoshiko Jinzenji. And stitch being used as mark making to add texture, movement, not to mention the visceral act of pulling needle and thread through is so satisfying. These little compositions are perfect for these hot days when standing to render large strokes and marks on the canvas are too fatiguing…#tornedgesstudio #texture #textileart #stitchasmarkmaking #surfaces by @tornedgesstudio

Too hot to work in the studio. It’s 32 degrees centigrade outside! Working at home playing with acrylic and glue resists on fabric, cutting up, haven’t decide next steps…Just washed them they will dry quickly outside. I am so missing getting into the studio on a consistent basis. The interruptions this year keep pausing my flow which I am finding frustrating as each restart is a bit confusing and well not productive. But this is a highly privileged problem… so today studio processes at home. More Water St studies. . . #tornedgesstudio #studioprocesses #materialplay #textileart #textilearts by @tornedgesstudio

Finally getting close to resolving Promethean Tendencies No. 2 (60” x 48” ). I never make claims that my art is pretty. I don’t want my art to be pretty actually. This has taken months maybe getting closer to a year. I have lost track. My pieces are very layered. Borrowing the language from Aimone’s Expressive Drawing Book, my process is “ Assert and Obliterate.” Sounds very dramatic but in short it is assert an idea/mark and let go, alter, build on or cover. Additive and subtractive. Someone said she’d like to paint like me, could I teach her. Well no because of my process. I suppose I could facilitate. I rarely use a brush anymore. And really I would say it’s the middle ground between drawing and painting ( paint sticks, paddles, scrapers…).
The other thing that has emerged in my compositions are entities that are just results of the rendering process. Inspired by a rock the Promethean Tendencies Series was born. Very close to finishing.Creating, cracking open, altering, separating, union…#tornedgesstudio #promethean#abstractart #oilpaintsticks #natureasmuse by @tornedgesstudio

A tiny fraction of my current work. Showing up to my practice good or bad. Confronting ideas, rethinking ideas, paying attention to the medium, wrestling with myself, navigating the utter worry and fear about the world and especially the suffering, carrying grief into the studio, finding comfort in the physical act of rendering, fighting self criticism and appreciating the opportunity to create. The moving forward no matter is, as stated many times, a form of resistance not to be diminished by the negativity or the cruelty that presently exists in the world. It’s a conscious effort to not become undone. To try, to make an effort to explore and expand…#tornedgesstudio #studiopractice #studioart #studioprocess #studioprocesses by @tornedgesstudio

State of affairs in part of the studio. It’s getting crowded. A number of works in progress/process. And I am enjoying it all. Each piece generally takes me months and in a couple of instances a couple of years. Glorious opportunities and glorious possibilities. All works influenced by my immediate environment and especially that of the natural world.”#tornedgesstudio #studio #studioday #studioprocess #natureasmuse #mixedmedia #abstract #abstractednature #studiopractice #chesterns #novascotiaartist #canadianartist by @tornedgesstudio

I keep forgetting to post this reel generously recorded by @cam_mackayns. I unfortunately had to miss this concert @chesterartcentre featuring a Lunenburg Academy for Music Performance Quartet but two of my large paintings were in attendance as backdrop to these wonderful young performers. So honoured and pleased for this opportunity. #tornedgesstudio #lampns #chesterartcentre #chesterns #classicalmusic #chambermusic #musicandfinearts #nsartist #chesternsart #novascotiaartist #canadianartists #canadianartist by @tornedgesstudio
