What happens when cells become unable to clear cellular waste? Biology professor Roberto Botelho’s lab is investigating how cells clear waste and what goes wrong when that process fails.

His research focuses on an enzyme called PIKfyve, which helps coordinate cellular functions. Without it, lysosomes, the cell's waste disposal system, can't do their job. This leads to a buildup of cellular "garbage," a process linked to serious neurological conditions like Alzheimer's disease.

"I have this deep passion about physics and the nature of the universe, but I'm also very passionate about doing something that's going to help everyday people,".

From studying astrophysics to modelling cell-targeted radiation therapies, PhD candidate Andrew Zwaniga has always used physics to solve complex problems. His doctoral research focuses on targeted radionuclide therapy, a promising approach that allows doctors to deliver radiation directly to cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue, making cancer treatments more precise and personalized.

Now, he is preparing to bring that expertise to patient care as a new resident in radiation oncology physics at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in September.

From the lab to the winner's podium! 🏆🧬 Third-year Biomedical Sciences student Khansa Mahia Sayyada took home the award for Best Overall Oral Presentation at Ontario Biology Day 2026 @laurentianu.

Presenting her research project alongside undergraduate students from universities across Ontario, Khansa wowed the judges with her talk on how cholesterol is trafficked within cells and its connection to disease. Though it was her first time delivering a formal oral presentation to a professional audience, her energy and clarity left quite an impression.

When she isn't busy in the lab, Khansa is making spaces more inclusive @TorontoMet as the VP of Community Development for @tmuwis and through her work with @hemoglobaltmu.

"Representation matters to me, but so does belonging. Through my involvement in research and student initiatives, I hope to help other students feel that there is space for them in science too."

Meet Atif Ahmad, a Computer Science PhD candidate and former C-suite executive who is bringing over 30 years of corporate insight to academia. After completing his Master of Digital Media @thecreativeschl, Atif turned his focus to studying how the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) is impacting the learning process.

His research explores how instant answers from generative AI tools can remove the productive struggle required for true learning and create an "illusion of competence." To bring that puzzle-solving element back to education, Atif is developing a brand-new pedagogical framework and testing it with first-year computer science students. 🧠💻
