do you feel more like yourself when you blend in or when you stand out?

lately, I feel more attractive when I’m wearing creative editorial makeup, but there’s no denying that a simple, natural look using basic products like @tower28beauty Multi-use Liner is easier and take me less time. I want to be able to wear both types of looks and still feel confident, and I want to develop a diverse set of skills for personal expression. no one told me I’d spend this much time and money on chasing pain relief when I hit my late 30s!! what are all my fellow aunties and uncles doing to prioritize all their bodily ailments?? i can’t be fighting my bunions, rehabbing my arthritic knees, and bullet-proofing my shoulders all at the same time! how are we triaging injuries and building holistic health?? by @totallysonya

for my self-conscious friends terrified of aging and scared of being seen trying, let this newly minted 39-yr-old auntie share her own experience being cringe online:

i’m STILL incredibly self conscious and scared of being perceived after 5+ years posting 🙃 i post anyway because there’s a part of me that relishes a challenge, and i love the therapeutic experience of creating and posting! persistently shaping and sharing an online persona allows me to confront and embrace myself with a radical acceptance. in the past 5+ years, i’ve gotten good at identifying and amplifying voices in my head (and IRL) that delight in my playful, creative impulses. i also hear scared/critical voices, but the better i get at responding to those fears with sturdy leadership, the less scared and restricted I feel.

in some ways, it’s been easier to start as a “late bloomer.” i feel less pressure and expectation to look/act cool as a middle-aged mom (ironically, it’s made me cooler 😌). it’s easier to share stuff i’ve made when the expectation is to just show up and play. it’s never too late to start exploring your creativity!

i hope this encourages you to share something you’ve always wanted to share. if this middle aged auntie can make silly videos of wearing crop tops with a stretch-marked belly, falling off walls while rock climbing, and painting her face with crazy colors, YOU can post your poem, your crochet project, your favorite recipe, your independent findings on the best carpet cleaner for coffee stains… we would all be better for it if more human-made stuff showed up on our algo.

this potato might be 39 years old, but she also scales walls at the climbing gym sometimes! she just needs to put on war paint and limber up for 30 minutes first, especially if she spent the previous 2 weeks rotting on the couch. fellow potatoes, take heart: you can bedrot AND work out. you contain multitudes.

i started climbing at 35 with zero prior fitness experience, and i’ve learned the hard way that jumping in cold leads to injury, frustration, and less time on the wall in the long run. turns out patience and mindful practice are important no matter your age, and lazy potatoes need to gently roll off the couch before yeeting themselves off plastic rocks.
