You have to consider your experience, education, skill level, time, products, overhead, demand, and the VALUE you’re providing to your clients. READ CAPTION ⬇️‼️‼️‼️ Healthy locs don’t start with a retwist… they start with a healthy scalp. 👏🏾 As locticians, we can shampoo, moisturize, oil and maintain the hair, but we also have to understand that scalp and hair health can be influenced by what’s happening inside the body too. Are you drinking enough water? 💧 Are you eating a balanced, nutrient-rich diet? Are you getting the vitamins and minerals your body actually needs? Are you paying attention when your scalp is showing you that something may be off? Products can help support the scalp, but they aren’t the entire answer. And as professionals, our job isn’t to diagnose our clients. It’s to recognize when something may be outside of our scope and know when to recommend that they speak with a dermatologist or healthcare professional. This is why I believe learning scalp health is just as important as learning how to do a beautiful retwist. You have to understand the foundation you’re working with. One mistake I see way too often is forcing new parts every time you retwist. 👀 Your client’s locs already have a foundation. Your job isn’t to create a brand new part every appointment, it’s to clarify the foundation that’s already there. This is where the comb-away method comes in. Instead of forcing the comb through and creating a new section, use your comb to gently separate and comb away the loose hairs that don’t belong in that loc. This helps you reveal the existing part and maintain the integrity of the original foundation. Constantly creating new parts can cause you to pull hair from neighboring locs, change the size of the sections, and throw off the foundation over time. Work WITH the foundation, not against it. 👏🏾 It’s little techniques like this that can completely change the quality of your work. 😭🚨 5 Mistakes New Locticians Make — Part 1: USING TOO MUCH D*MN PRODUCT One of the biggest mistakes I see new locticians make is thinking more product = a cleaner, longer-lasting retwist. It doesn’t! Using too much gel, wax, mousse, or heavy products can cause buildup inside and around the loc. And because locs are compact, that buildup isn’t always easy to completely wash out. Over time, you can end up with locs that feel heavy, look dull, collect lint, or have visible residue. Your product should assist your technique — not replace it. A clean retwist comes from proper sectioning, tension, technique, and knowing which products actually belong on the hair and scalp. And this is exactly why I created Mastering the Art of Locs.
