Close/Far Recordings is thrilled to announce its first vinyl edition.

The album Lead & Coal: A Sounding, is one part of a larger, eponymous sound art and critical spatial practice project by NNN Cook, Nokosee Fields, Gavin Kroeber, Josh Levi and Aaron Owens, exploring mining landscapes in St. Louis’ constitutive hinterlands: the Old Missouri Lead Belt and Southern Illinois Coal Belt.

19th-century St. Louis could arguably be understood as an extractivist war machine: digging up coal from Illinois, melting lead from Missouri, producing armaments for the St. Louis Arsenal, and provisioning the genocidal military forces at Jefferson Barracks. Over the past year, artists NNN Cook, Nokosee Fields, Gavin Kroeber, Josh Levi, and Aaron Owens have been visiting these post-industrial territories and performing “soundings”—sonic experiments conducted on, in, at, with, and for the land. This album collects recordings from this artistic fieldwork.

There will be old songs we may or may not remember how to play, past band members joining the lineup, a set that’s waaay longer than our usual 30-35 minutes, and probably shenanigans. Likely, even. Maybe some test pressings and other oddments for sale, too. No promises.

RADIATOR GREYS is the long-running psychedelic noise music project of St. Louis-based artist Josh Levi. Since 2011, Levi has created a haunting assemblage of harsh noise, power ambient, and layered tape loops that borders on any number of expanding, experimental soundscapes. Utilizing samplers, corroding magnetic tape, cascading synths, contact mics and chains, and no input feedback loops, their compositions often crumble in on themselves before regenerating into unfamiliar forms in a wake of sonic detritus. Informed as much by the works of Beatriz Ferreyra as they are by Aaron Dilloway, Radiator Greys’ focus on repetition, tension, release, and collapse resonates deeply in the emotive expanse of genre non-conforming music.

IMELDA MARCOS is an avant noise rock band from Chicago whose sonic palette is pointillistic, percussive and rhythmic. NPR Music Viking’s Choice described the band as, “... hypnotic, buzzy, technical, but oh-so-fun noise-rock.” Formed in 2013 by guitarist Dave Cosejo and drummer Matt Durso - who originally met through a Craigslist ad - the band has released three full-length albums and two EPs. While writing new material for LP4, the band recently added Jake Haas on bass guitar (also met via Craigslist).

On July 28, I celebrated a full year of working as @counterpublic Public Programs Manager! It has been such a journey from 6 years as full-time stay-at-home-dad / freelance graphic designer to being a full-time employee of an arts org in St. Louis’ vibrant and bustling arts and culture community! I couldn’t have asked for a better place to land or a better team to be a part of. It’s something special to be fully aware that the “good old days” are now and that you’re a part of a “golden era” crew. When I came on board, I immediately felt like everyone had my back and I theirs. After a year of workshops, talks, activations, a freaking Convening, and literally 1 million e-mails, I know that that bond remains stronger than ever. As we gear up to the opening of Counterpublic 2026 Coyote Time (September 10 - December 12), I urge every single one of you to check out this incredible citywide arts exhibition. We’ve had the great fortune of working with 5 amazing curators, 50 incredible artists, and a legion of creatives, builders, and community partners working tirelessly behind the scene to bring dreams into fruition. I’m incredibly proud of Counterpublic’s work and I know in my heart of hearts that St. Louis deserves a triennial of this caliber. We should all be so proud. We had a lot of fun last year at The Royale and we’re going to do it again this Thursday! I’ll be DJing along with other NMC board members. Raffle starts at 8pm.

NMC’s summer break is nearly over and we are ready to kick off our 68th season! In preparation of our year to come, you can support New Music Circle’s upcoming 68th season by joining us for an evening of drinks and DJs on Thursday, August 20th, from 6pm-10pm at The Royale (3132 S Kingshighway Blvd, 63139). This event is FREE to attend and a percentage of food and drinks purchased during these hours will go to support New Music Circle. We will be raffling off several prizes beginning at 8pm (must be present to win).
