The Town of Tusayan, located just one mile from the South Rim entrance, has plenty of lodging options and remains fully operational and unaffected by the recent floods at the Grand Canyon National Park.

tips for seeing sunrise & sunset at the grand canyon 🏜️✨👇🏼 #ad

the grand canyon is beautiful at any time of day, but golden hour completely transforms the colors, shadows and layers of the canyon and is a MUST-SEE

this is not inclusive, but based on my visits over the last decade:

🌄 best sunrise spots:
• south kaibab trail
• mather point
• yavapai point

my favorite sunrise hike is the south kaibab trail to ooh aah point! it’s 0.9 miles down—but remember, you’ll have to hike that same steep stretch back up.

🌅 best sunset spots:
• shoshone point
• mather point
• powell point
• hopi point

for a quieter sunset adventure, walk the mostly flat one-mile trail to shoshone point.

a few things to know:

✨ arrive at least 30 minutes early to find your spot and enjoy the changing light
✨ stay after the sun disappears—the canyon often becomes even more colorful
✨ bring layers because temperatures drop quickly before sunrise and after sunset (except in the middle of summer hehe)
✨ stay overnight in tusayan! being only about one mile from the park entrance makes those early mornings so much easier & a quick drive to your hotel is great after a long day!!

📍tusayan, arizona has so much to do between sunrise and sunset including e-bike rentals you can take into the park, aerial, ground and guided tours, horseback riding and an IMAX feature to fill your day PLUS it’s the perfect place for a post-sunrise coffee & breakfast or a filling dinner after a day of adventure ☕️ @townoftusayanaz

Grand Canyon National Park is OPEN.

There are some closures, and water is currently limited on the South Rim, so visitors should check current conditions and come prepared. But the park remains open, and the Grand Canyon is still here to explore.

Unfortunately, many people are staying away, and local guides, hotels, restaurants, outfitters, and other small businesses are feeling the impact.

If you’re planning a visit, please don’t assume the entire park is closed. Check the latest conditions, plan ahead, and come experience one of the most extraordinary places on Earth.

Tusayan has been hard at work over the past few years putting together the new Tusayan Loops Trails Project. Enter a new double loop of singletrack that weaves through Kaibab National Forest/Baaj Nwaajvo I’tah Kukveni National Monument right outside of town. Trailheads and parking areas are to come too. For now, the trails are currently unmarked (they’re flagged for ongoing trail work), but enough of a tread exists to pick your way along them fairly faithfully. Ultimately, they’ll connect to the Tusayan-Montane Campground and even some connectors will bridge to the Arizona Trail. The Long Loop is 7 miles of singletrack while the Short Loop is over 4 miles in length. If you cross them in a figure-eight, you can string over 10 miles of mountain bike trail together.

I took advantage of stellar weather to finally get some riding down on a good chunk of the loops while the ground is dry (and not peanut butter mud from the recent monsoons). And the conditions couldn’t have been better.

September has brought a swarm of flowers carpeting the ponderosa floors of the South Rim. Caps and bushels of rabbitbrush reach skyward; blankets of snakeweed smolder among white chunks of Kaibab limestone amid spurts of red paintbrush. This has mixed with monsoon rain producing swaths of grass growing under the eaves of pines. The whole place is just a floor of color right now.

The Tusayan Loops Trails travel through groves of Ponderosa Pines where you can ride deep enough into the forest to have just the sound of plants swaying in the wind. Some sections crossed through massive fields and meadows of historical burn scars that provided spectacular views of cloud systems building in the distance. Although I got away riding with a rigid bike, I bet most would enjoy suspension; chunks of Kaibab limestone are endemic to the area’s surfaces.

I’m excited to see this project continue to develop. And when complete, we’ll be throwing an official big opening with @townoftusayanaz to get more riders out on this new trail system.
