![The Randar exploit is a critical, high-level coordinate exploit in Minecraft that allows users to find the exact, real-time locations of players on a server. Developed and used secretly by the Spawnmasons, it was revealed in April 2024 and is considered one of the most powerful exploits in Minecraft history. [1, 2, 3, 4]
How the Randar Exploit Works
Randar works by exploiting a 13-year-old coding mistake in Minecraft (dating back to Beta 1.8) where the server's random number generator (RNG) is incorrectly reused for multiple, separate game events.
• The Flaw: When a chunk loads, the server checks if a structure—specifically a Woodland Mansion—should generate. This process sets the server's global random seed ($world.rand$) to a specific value.
• The Trigger: A player on the server (the attacker) breaks a block. The precise XYZ coordinates of the resulting dropped item are determined by the same global $world.rand$.
• The Calculation: By recording the exact coordinates of the dropped item, the exploit uses LLL lattice reduction (a math algorithm) to work backward and determine the internal state of the server's RNG.
• The Result: By calculating this state, the exploit reveals which chunk was most recently loaded by a player, allowing for real-time tracking. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Impact and History
• Discovery: Discovered by Kn0pf0x (pcm1k) and perfected by the Spawnmasons.
• Affected Versions: The flaw exists in Minecraft versions from Beta 1.8 through 1.12.2.
• 2b2t Impact: It was used extensively on the 2b2t anarchy server in 2023,, often under the guise of the "Mun Map" meme, to track players, find stashes, and map out player activity.
• Status: The exploit was "soft-patched" when 2b2t updated to modern versions (1.13+) in August 2023, but any server that previously ran 1.12.2 or lower is considered compromised, as old data (like ReplayMod files) can still be analyzed. [2, 3, 4, 6, 7]
Prevention
To prevent this exploit, servers must update to version 1.13 or higher, which fixed the bug where in-game events shared the same RNG.
