Sport is Political ⚽️🍉 Solidarity with @fezshaheen and his futsal team Palestine (situated on stolen Palawa lands in Lutruwita/Tasmania) for refusing to remove the slogan “from the river to the sea…” from their jerseys.

In standing against anti-Palestinian racism, the team were denied the opportunity to play and awarded an automatic loss. Shame on any authority that claims to “fully support the right to represent…Palestinian identity” but has an issue with “one specific slogan”.

If you don’t stand for this kind of discrimination please send a complaint to Football Tasmania and Football Australia (contact details below) about their decision to cancel the team’s game because of the jersey. Please highlight that you are offended by the decision, see it as discrimination and no longer feel comfortable in their spaces. Please demand the team be allowed to play without censoring the jerseys.

The Big Ride for Palestine is coming to Nipaluna/Tasmania!

Join us Sunday, November 8, at 9am at Parliament Lawns for a ride through the CBD. This will be a relaxed ride, where we will travel as a group and aim to make it as accessible as possible. We will leave at roughly 9:30am and end back at Parliament Lawns around 10:30am for Dabke.

The Big Ride for Palestine Australia is an initiative by supporters of the Palestinian people that combines a love of cycling with practical solidarity
and awareness raising. We are supporting the Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA’s partner organisations - MA’AN Development Centre & Palestinian Women’s Humanitarian Organisation This is the 10th year of The Big Ride in Australia. Since then, we have raised over $300,000.

We encourage people to register their ride through The Big Ride website and share their ride on Strava.

Come show solidarity with the Palestinian people! See you then!

📄TPAN Sports Club is a Palestinian Sports Club situated on stolen Palawa lands in Lutruwita/Tasmania.

Sports is yet another example that everything is political.

In the last few years Israel has killed more than 800 athletes in Gaza during the ongoing genocide, including 421 football players. We have also seen tactics used to undermine Palestinian participation in sports including the destruction of some 288 sports facilities, detaining and restricting travel and even targeting players’ limbs in an attempt to maim or cripple.

⚽️Yet to this day, FIFA has not suspended or sanctioned the Israel Football Association but instead continues to support their participation in FIFA associated competitions serving to “wash” the stains of apartheid, occupation and genocide through public consumption of Israel in sports.

A clear double standard is on display when compared to FIFA’s response to Russia. Within days of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, FIFA and UEFA suspended all Russian national and club teams from competition “until further notice.” That ban remains in place today, four years on, locking Russia out of the 2026 World Cup entirely.

This disparity in FIFAs treatment of Israel and Russia in the face of clear evidence of war crimes, crimes against humanity and aggressing on their neighbours exactly demonstrates the point - participation in sports is political. Whether or not a country is penalised in this system is heavily influenced by their perceived political alignment. Israel is an ally of The West. Russia is not.

FIFA’s presentation of the ‘peace prize’ to Donald Trump demonstrates the political dimension further. Remember this award was given after Trump’s failed efforts to land the Nobel Peace Prize last year. How can the presentation of this farcical award be given to the man who greenlights Israel’s crimes and bombs sovereign nations and not be seen as an attempt to curry political favour?

These examples are within the arena of football however there are many sporting codes out there, each with their own political dynamics at play.
