86 yr old Mama Joan and James Talarico today. You can’t see, but her feet are off the ground. She’s floating.
She sent James money for his campaign.
You can too! Help Talarico take Texas. @texansforjamestalarico by @tphealy

It was a Tuesday.

A cold front had passed, so the weather was perfect. The sky was almost impossibly blue.

I was on the street, on my way to vote. Fred was a few minutes ahead and called me, startled. He was a plane buff, and I had my recreational pilot’s license. A big jet, he said, was flying surprisingly low over Manhattan.

From the corner of 11th Street and Fifth Avenue, it was all too easy to see. But too far to hear.

Then the second plane hit.

The sound I’ll always remember was local. Not the plane, but us: scores of people from the neighborhood standing in the street. The sound of shock, panic and disbelief.

9/11 became part of my working life. I chaired Creative Time and worked against a lot of odds to make Tribute in Light happen. Would people want to see ghosts of the towers? Could lights be made strong enough? Was it unpatriotic unless the lights were red and blue? What about migrating birds?

A few years later, I led the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, where we worked on every good idea we could think of to bring the arts back downtown.

LMCC had artist studios on the 91st and 92nd floors of the North Tower. One of its artists, Michael Richards, died there when the first plane hit.

Before he died, Michael made Tar Baby vs. St. Sebastian, casting his own body as a Tuskegee Airman, pierced not by arrows but by 18 small airplanes.

There was a lot of history in that choice. Tuskegee Airman and engineer Alton Burton had helped plan the World Trade Center. The Airmen held their annual convention there in 1983.

And the work Michael was making when he died depicted a Tuskegee pilot riding a burning meteor. by @tphealy

So much is being erased, removed and destroyed in Washington.

I have a new essay in The Atlantic about one piece of this infuriating story: Joel Shapiro’s Blue, the sculpture removed last week from the Kennedy Center. Link in bio. by @tphealy

One very fine day to turn 65 being spoiled by my man, Fred P. Hochberg. I wouldn’t be here without @travelling_fred

More than half my life with the best friend and spouse I could ever imagine. And blessed with such incredible friends and family who won’t rest in this dark time.

Hope and change, fury and strength and a joyful sense of the absurd as we bring decency and democracy back. Plus martinis and poetry! #martini #65 #seniorcitizen #poetry taken in Miami Beach, Florida by @tphealy
