Last day of a four day fly rod exploration, couldn’t have ended better than 10hr wading up river with no cell service wearing my fathers fly hat (switched to my hat after, sorry paps, felt works in Sierra Nevadas, but not the Texas heat), on one of the hardest to catch rivers, during flash flood storm warnings. I got carppies, sunfish, and bass.. thanks to the rangers I met (bonded over my mother being a ranger in Alaska and Montana and wants to saddle up horses and go on a river/fly ride), and the solitude I craved.. back to the city I go.(then off to the gulf for red fin fishin’).

Above the timberline, where the cold streams run,
A boy walks beside his father in the morning sun.
Two fly rods rise like slender, waiting trees,
And the high Sierra whispers through the breeze.

They climb past granite, meadow, stone,
Into a country wild and almost unknown.
Snow still lingers in the shadowed ravine,
While clouds drift white above the peaks of green.

His father shows him how to read the water.
Where the current slows, where the deep pools gather.
“Cast softly,” he says. “Let the river decide.”
The boy holds his breath and sends the line wide.

The fly lands lightly, a feather on glass,
And for one long moment, the whole world seems to pass.
Then a flicker of gold beneath the mountain sky.
A trout turns once, and the dry line flies.

They laugh as the fish slips free from the hand,
Back to its kingdom of water and land.
Its scales catch the sun like a small piece of flame,
And the boy knows he’ll remember its name.

By evening, the peaks turn purple and blue,
And the wind carries the scent of pine through.
No trophy is needed, no story to prove.
Just a father, a son, and the river’s slow move.

They shoulder their rods as the first stars appear,
Walking together through the cold mountain air.
And long after the golden trout disappear,
The boy will carry this day for years. by @tprblm.drifts
