Recently, I became a Qualified Healthcare Interpreter for the Spanish language. I have been speaking Spanish for a long time, since I began learning as a small child in primary school. My skills only grew with practice and the people around me, but my passion grew for the Spanish language when I met my high school Spanish teacher, who was equally as passionate. I studied with her for four years. I entered East Carolina University as a freshman with a double major in biology and Hispanic studies. While I switched to nursing after a year of school, I still continued to practice my Spanish skills. I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad 10 years ago in Guatemala, and I have attached some of those photos here. I saw inequities in care that looked familiar to the ones I saw at home. I have been surrounded by Hispanic and Latino people my whole life, being from eastern North Carolina, as well as having lived in Florida, Massachusetts, and New York. This is a love letter back to the patients that feel misunderstood, invisible, or unheard. I am here for you. This is just one small step towards continuing to reduce health disparities and healthcare inequities by being able to provide culturally respondent care (in an official capacity, as an interpreter). There is a lot of work left, but I feel that with research, dedication, and compassion, we can begin to heal our health systems. 👨🏻‍⚕️🩺🗣️🇬🇹🇵🇷❤️‍🔥 taken in Orlando, Florida by @tr3yonce
