I haven’t watched it and probably won’t. With less than 24 hours notice, 4 hours sleep, the hair and nerves were NOT “relaxed” 🫣 but that’s as real as it comes 🤭 so I hope I was articulate enough to get the right message across for my family, friends, for women across the motu and Pasifika and Māori women AND men needed in tech! I did use ChatGPT to help with one of my answers lol but I swear it was from the heart! Diversity brings diverse conversations & innovation. WOMEN & PASIFIKA WOMEN USE TECH TOO, SO WHERE’S OUR SEAT AT THE TABLE? FIGHT FOR THAT SEAT LIKE ITS MUSICAL CHAIRS 🪑

You can’t find the vā in the data.

8,700 public service jobs gone across around 40 agencies, with AI expected to pick up more of what’s left.

But we know where Pacific people sit: frontline, case management, community liaison, family support, health navigation — the roles where trust matters most.

Pacific people are around 11% of the public service workforce, but around 8% of the population. So when cuts land, they land twice: on Pacific workers, and on the families who needed someone who understood them.

I think about my late father.

He served through IRD, became Administrator of Tokelau through MFAT, and was also a Justice of the Peace and the only registered Tokelau interpreter in New Zealand.

His final work was interpreting in health settings — sitting between a patient and a system that could not understand them.
That was trust.

Families from all backgrounds came to our home in his IRD days. Pacific, Pākehā, Asian, Indian, African, Arab etc He listened. He knew their stories. He made people feel seen.

Isn’t that the heart of public service?

The vā is the space between people.

It is where trust lives.
Where silence is understood.
Where someone can read the room before a form is filled out.

AI might inherit the tick box, but it can lose the reason.

And if this is about efficiency, we need to be honest: AI is not cheap. Token costs, compute, infrastructure, and vendor dependency are real. The savings story is not clean.

So why not evolve roles instead of cutting them?

Let AI carry the admin burden where it makes sense, so public servants can focus on judgment, connection, community care, and proactive support.

Section 27 of the NZ Bill of Rights Act guarantees natural justice. But when the human in the loop becomes a formality, justice risks becoming a formality too.

You cannot programme the vā into a system.

So how do we expect AI to read the room?

Pacific people need to be in the room shaping the questions, giving clarity, and drawing the red lines.

The relational space is where justice lives.

Surely that is not a “cost” to cut.
