I raised you to love well — without losing yourself.

Over the years, we’ve had important conversations about women who feel silenced or diminished in relationships. That awareness matters. It still does.

But as a mom of three boys — 26, 19, and 17 — I think about something else too.

I think about the men.

The men who keep the peace at their own expense.
The ones who avoid hard conversations because they don’t want the emotional fallout.
The ones who slowly accommodate and accommodate until that just becomes who they are.
The ones who look strong on the outside but quietly lose their voice inside their own relationships.

Relational imbalance isn’t gendered.

Over-functioning isn’t gendered.
Self-silencing isn’t gendered.
Walking on eggshells isn’t gendered.

Strength in a relationship — whether dating, partnership, or marriage — isn’t about dominance, but it isn’t about shrinking either.

If one of my boys reads this someday, I want you to hear me clearly:

Be kind.
Be respectful.
Be emotionally intelligent.
Love deeply.

But never confuse love with losing yourself.

Being supportive doesn’t mean being silent.
Keeping the peace shouldn’t require you to disappear.
And partnership should never mean asking permission to exist fully as yourself.

The healthiest relationships are built on mutual respect, mutual voice, and mutual boundaries — for both people.

That’s the kind of man I’ve tried to raise you to be.

Strong. Loving. Steady. Whole.
