Brick (2005)

With Brick, director Rian Johnson fashioned a hardboiled neo-noir out of the most unlikely place for such a genre: a high school campus. This delicious detective story is full of the usual noir tropes: an ambiguous femme fatale, a larger conspiracy hiding within the seams of the initial premise, and a hard-nosed protagonist who can return quips and punches in equal measure.

But the thing that makes or breaks a well done neo-noir is the atmosphere. And that is in abundance in Brick. Rian Johnson creates a setting that is unlike any high school that you may have seen. Characters speak in an unusual lingo that Johnson apparently created himself.

Brick feels like a movie that does not take place on earth, and that is exactly what the director intended, I feel.

The Long Goodbye (1973)

Elliot Gould, the man who millennials know as the crackerjack father of Ross and Monica, once played the famous Raymond Chandler sleuth Philip Marlowe in Robert Altman's expertly crafted, stylish neo-noir 'The Long Goodbye'.

Gould plays Marlowe as a wobbly, wisecracking detective with a perennial cigarette in his mouth.

The movie is beautifully constructed in the traditions of neo-noir, but Altman brings in his own idiosyncratic sensibilities to the genre.

Take for example: Marlowe's cat, whose specific cat food preference leads to a quietly hilarious sequence of swapping food cans, and his neighbours, a bunch of scantily clad women performing yoga that always make Marlowe's visitors lose their sense of direction.

Klute (1971)

Klute is a classic, top-rung neo-noir that is, without a doubt, bolstered by a deeply internalized performance by a terrific Jane Fonda. She essentially plays two characters: the hard-nosed, no-nonsense call girl that her clients see, and as the movie peels back her layers with precision, we see a vulnerable woman that—for all the times she has had sex—hasn't yet been made love to.

The real magic lies in the way Fonda melds these two characters; there are no sharp outlines, only blurred edges.

The great Roger Ebert literally stole words from my mouth when he wrote that this movie should have been named 'Bree'. This is Fonda's film, through and through.
