Traditions are hard while you’re living the travel life. However, they’re something that feels important to keep up. The traditions from home to take on the road as well as the new traditions to creat while away. It’s all a little stressful (even though Shawn would say I stress too much about them! Ha!).

I’ve always loved getting my jumbo pumpkin photos with the kids. The pumpkins were so inexpensive at the grocery store and it started when they were babies. I love seeing the progression as the kids grew. I figured this was something that I’d have to give up. Surprisingly, as we walked out of our final Canadian dinner we came across this Autumn display with the same sized giant pumpkins! I HAD to get a picture! I wouldn’t let them move, or barely touch, the set up but at least I got pics of them near the pumpkins!!

I’m so happy I could carry this tradition on for at least one more Fall. by @trackthemackpack

We’ve had a few hiccups along the way but this is our first major one that is impacting our travel plans. But at least we had this view while we waited on the side of the road to hear back from AAA!

(We came into this lifestyle prepared for zigzags to pop up. We’re flexible and making it work. It seems like a minor thing that will just set us back a few hours. No biggie!) taken in Sussex, New Brunswick by @trackthemackpack

We were (UN)lucky enough to get to visit a Canadian hospital today. Logan said, “9 stitches for a 9 year old!” He was a trooper through it all and I only almost fainted once! He enjoyed his McDonald’s lunch afterwards. The Fundy-Nationalpark workers were so great! They came and checked in on him while we were at the hospital and when we got back they had a care package for him. (I’ll spare you the gory pictures but if you are interested you can message me for them. Yuck!!!) by @trackthemackpack

I can’t believe we’ve been gone for almost 3 months already!! We’re coming back to NH for a week. While we’re there we’d love to see as many of you as possible! We’re going to let the kids play on the playground while the adults catch up. The kids are looking forward to seeing their friends again! We hope you can make it!! by @trackthemackpack

When you’re in a Dark Sky Preserve you have to see the night sky. It has been rainy and cloudy the entire time we’ve been here. Even today, it was a high of 53° horribly windy and rainy all day. This evening it cleared up so after dinner we made the decision to go to one of the lookouts to see if we could catch a glimpse. And we sure did! Several shooting stars and the Milky Way! Most of these pictures are from my iPhone but I especially like the ones with the trees silhouetted. The last photo is from Shawn’s long exposure app. So many stars!!!! Such an awesome experience to share with the kids.

I wasn’t familiar with this story that was on the sidelines of this tragic day 25 years ago. Once I learned of Gander and the story behind their hospitable people, I read up on it and learned even more. A few months ago, I read The Day The World Came To Town and decided we needed to stop in Gander on our way through Newfoundland. More recently, I read Channel of Peace and heard the story that was the inspiration for the musical Come From Away. Newfoundlanders have a unique culture all to themselves, including new sayings and words. Visitors to the island are “come from always” which is where the musical got its name. Since I had never seen the musical but had wanted to ever since I learned of the story, seeing it for the first time in Gander the week of the 25th anniversary was such a special thing that I realized *needed* to do! It was a bucket list item that I never knew I needed to accomplish!

As Mr. Rogers said, in tragic times look for the helpers. The story of Gander is truly a story that encompasses this sentiment.

I highly recommend reading these two books. Whether you’ve seen the musical or not, it’s eye opening to hear this story. by @trackthemackpack
