I have been working as a psychotherapist/ counsellor since 2013 and after having completed thousands of clinical hours I can honestly say that every client I have seen with mental health issues has experienced some type of early childhood attachment wound. This means they have not experienced a secure attachment but one that was either: anxious, avoidant or disorganised. This has occurred with one or more of their primary caregivers.

Attachment theory is a highly nuanced concept that is well worth researching . It is formed in the first 3-4 years of a child’s life and children are born with an innate desire to connect with their parents in a secure way. It is a deep heart need and if this need is not met then the child suffers. There is nothing that causes more sadness for a child than an unreachable parent. This unresolved pain usually starts to present in adolescence. It also gets “acted out” as they try to form intimate relationships later in life.

As a society we are currently dealing with huge levels of anxiety and depression as well as high suicide rates. We have a mental health crisis.

So why isn’t there more education about how to parent well? Why is the medical system so keen to diagnose and medicate rather than consider childhood trauma?

Parenting with babies and young children is not a weekly or routine scheduled “catch up”. To build a secure attachment with a child takes time, intention and emotional availability from the parents. A child needs to experience unconditional parental love, tenderness, safety and connection in a predictable way. You can’t form secure attachment if there is no time to connect. We can’t assume our children will automatically connect with us. Secure attachment needs to be a family focus otherwise children suffer. The needs of a child 0-3 in age are unique to that age group, these needs are part of basic developmental psychology. Sure children compensate by building defences, but they still also suffer attachment wounds which become mostly unconscious. These wounds can later push for attention creating anxiety and depression. Parenting is not some sort of scheduled activity, it is 24/7 intentional care. by @tracycrowepsychotherapy

The homemaker.
The ability to create a safe, nurturing, loving, routine based home is crucial for the healthy development of a child’s mind. Home needs to be a haven, a place where feelings can be thought about and where it is ok to be vulnerable. A place of love and warmth. Family dinners and an organised home can help to soothe the nervous system. The reverse can create anxiety, depression and unhealthy eating patterns.

In my clinical work as clients heal from a childhood of busy chaos, they will often start to create an organised home for themselves. Unconsciously this can reflect what is happening in their own minds as they rewire their neural pathways, repair their own emotional processing system and work through areas of their childhoods where they have been emotionally stuck. by @tracycrowepsychotherapy

A Christian perspective.
John 10:10
“The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. “

Some therapeutic aims that facilitate the ability to live a rich and satisfying life include the following and many others. 🙏🙏

- The development of psychological freedom.
- The ability to form intimate and close relationships. (for Christians this is with the Lord as well).
- The ability to make the link between one’s personal testimony and unconscious responses. ie unconscious to conscious awareness.
- To understand when one is responding to past hurts and “acting out”, without self awareness.
- The ability to form “secure” attachments with children, especially in the first 3 years of their lives. To be able to heal own attachment wounds and understand what children need developmentally. This is as opposed to forming anxious, avoidant or dysfunctional attachment. I believe that one of the greatest deceptions of our times is that young children don’t need the maternal secure attachment.
- The ability to “ check in” (a previous post).
- to be set free from addictions (which are usually symptoms of the lack of some of the above).
- to reduce operating out of defence mechanisms eg busyness or perfectionism, rationalisation, intellectualisation ( a previous post) by @tracycrowepsychotherapy
