In 2013, I worked at a rescue and was at the Humane Society to transport one of our animals who had been turned in. As I sat waiting, a young mother walked in with her crying child and a puppy tucked under her arm. Her stress was apparent as she announced that she didn’t have time to sit and wait because she had to go to work. “Can anybody take her?” I told her I could, and she plopped the calm little 4-month-old lab mix on my lap. I asked her name as the mother rushed out, her child still crying, looking back at the stranger who would take his dog. “Pickles,” she half shouted over her shoulder, tugging the child behind her by his hand. Well, we are going to change that, I thought. “I’ll take such good care of your puppy,” I hoped to reassure the small boy. Intending to rehome her, Willa became our baby instead, and Daisy Mae’s best friend. (This is where I’d hope to write all that she meant to us, but the words are stuck in my chest.) With broken hearts, we said goodbye to our girl on Tuesday, March 10. She smelled of vanilla ice cream and peanut butter as we kissed her sweet dog face. Wilhelmina Bird Dog, Baby Bird, Mina, Love of My Life. Mommy, Daddy, Koda and all of the kitties miss you. If there is a place after this, I hope to dream of you there with Daisy, Romeo, Mosey, Petey, Sheba, Dahli and so many other precious little souls. My heaven is wherever you are. by @tracythomason
