Early (late 70s) Athletics West Set

Set is believed to be from Ken Stadel (black and white pic with the flow) who was a renowned shot-put thrower from KS.

Below is an excerpt from “Swoosh The Unauthorized Story of Nike and the Men Who Played There” written by J. B. Strasser.

(Thanks to @scottrenus for the book info, always appreciate your help)

“They decided to open a track club in Eugene and offer a group of athletes enough support to approximate the assistance given by Eastern bloc countries. “Athletics West,” they decided to call it. “Athletics” because it meant track and field, “West” because it was in the west and the Iron Curtain was in the east. The decision not to name the club “Nike” was deliberate, an effort not only to avoid antagonizing amateur officials but to abstain from commercializing the club. Runners would know Nike was behind the club, and wherever Athletics West athletes competed, the Nike name gained legitimacy. The move was an example of what Strasser called “whispering loudly” -allowing te consumer to figure things out for himself. When other shoe companies started track clubs that imitated Athletics West, they missed the nuance and used the same name for their clubs that they did for their shoes.

AW, as it became known, opened its doors on November 13 1977, when a handful of charter members from around the country came to Eugene to live and train together in emulation of Europe’s best teams. Blue Ribbon gave them basic subsidies: a coach, a masseur, medical supervision, insurance, a weight ron an exercise physiologist, and school tuition or part-time jobs wil local businessmen if they chose. The company also covered trave expenses to world-class competitions from New Zealand to Europe. The arrangement undoubtedly broke amateur rules-for the right reasons”

Thanks Omar @headshotkc for letting me add these to the Nike collection by @tradingpostkc
