✨️ EP 5: LESLIE RICE - ALMOST A MOUNTAIN ✨

Often, things happen in a painting that weren’t part of the original plan. For Leslie Rice, the artist’s job is not to force the work back towards an idea, but to recognise when the painting is offering something better.️️

In this excerpt from Episode 5 of Nanda\Hobbs: In Conversation, Ralph Hobbs and Leslie Rice discuss the unexpected ways a lifetime spent around tattooing has found its way into Leslie’s painting, sometimes without him even realising it.

That idea runs throughout the full episode, pulling together fragments from different worlds and different moments in painting history. It’s part of what gives Almost A Mountain its restless energy: nothing is quite as fixed as it first appears.

In Gallery One, Leslie Rice returns to Castle Hill (Cudtharinga) in Townsville, a familiar landmark from his childhood and a point of departure for his new body of paintings. Drawing on the distinctive pink granite formation as a subject, ALMOST A MOUNTAIN is an important new chapter in Rice’s practice.

Join us to celebrate from 6 – 8pm.

How big does a rock have to be before it becomes a mountain? Leslie Rice has some thoughts.

ALMOST A MOUNTAIN
24 September – 10 October
Gallery One, Nanda\Hobbs
Opening night: Thursday 24 September, 6–8pm

Taking Castle Hill in Townsville as his point of departure, Rice digs into the landscape, local history, vernacular culture, and all the strange ways we decide that a particular bit of landscape might mean something to us. Part history, part mythology, part moderately-sized rock.

Come have a look. Have a drink. Join Leslie Rice and the Nanda\Hobbs team for the opening.

Here’s one for those interested in painting, particularly any of my NAS 1st year students who may be here…yesterday we were discussing how calling a colour objectively “cool” or “warm” is kinda useless as it is all very relative and context dependent (and somewhat subjective)…today I was working on the beginnings of two very different things that exemplify this perfectly…this is the exact same colour being applied to two different surfaces, and appears a warm kinda tan colour in one, a cool mauve in the other. A warm highlight becomes a cool shadow, in fact here it ain’t simply a different temperature, but a whole other colour….it’s all part of the game…An extreme example, sure. But, it serves the point. Play the colour game hard and smart, kidlets! Video by the always helpful @sidney.teodoruk by @tragicplastic

Hey Friends, on Thursday September 24th please come celebrate the failure of Townsville’s finest! My home town monolith ‘Castle Hill’ didn’t ever quite manage to be an actual mountain, but I’ve Cézanned/Hokusai’d that thing regardless, and made a dozen or so paintings of it that will show @nandahobbs in just a few weeks. Would love to see some almost friendly faces there.

After 5 years of running the studio seminars for 2nd year painters at NAS, I just delivered my last ever one. I hope those who attended over the time found them informative and entertaining. Thanks to @stephenlittlestudio for handing me the reins, and to @masonkimber and #christinedean for doing some of the lifting. I’m proud of what we achieved x by @tragicplastic

Gave myself a few months off instagram at the start of this year, so didn’t get to post about the excellent ‘Searchers’ exhibition held in January at the NAS, which featured artists who work with spray. Curated by the effervescent @fionalowry and indomitable @kgcashman it was a breath of fresh air, tainted only by the noxious fumes. Either way, it provided my with this install image of my Ned Kelly brandishing two firearms hanging in the same room as a Sidney Nolan Ned doing the same. Check that off the upside-down-bucket-with-a-slot-cut-in-it list. Oh- and a pretty handy Howard Arkley in the middle…other highlights: @benquilty @benjamin_aitken_art @muracetresorart by @tragicplastic
