POSTS STORIES REELS

They warned Little Red Riding Hood about the wolves lurking deep within the forest. They told her to stay on the path, keep her eyes open, and never trust the creatures watching from between the trees.

But somewhere along the way, the story took an unexpected turn.

Perhaps the wolves weren’t waiting for Little Red Riding Hood after all. Perhaps she was the one leading the pack.

And as the sun disappeared behind the trees and the forest grew quiet, one thing became certain.

This Little Red Riding Hood has a few tricks up her sleeve, and the big bad wolves are on her side.

Happy Halloween from Little Red Riding Hood and her pack of wolves! 🎃

@trailboundcanines and I frolicked through the woods together and got some lovely photos of her puppy-dogs.

Here’s one of my faves from the bunch!

My Forest Queen. 👑

At twelve and a half years old, Rayne’s love for the outdoors hasn’t changed one bit. We’ve spent so many years exploring trails, wandering through forests, and finding new places together, and it’s something I don’t think I’ll ever take for granted.

There’s a certain familiarity that comes with sharing this many adventures with the same dog. I know how much she enjoys being out there, and even after all these years, seeing that big smile on her face is still one of my favorite things.

I think that’s one of the things I appreciate most about the life we’ve built together. It isn’t necessarily about where we go or how far we travel, but about continuing to share something that has brought us both so much happiness over the years.

Does your dog have a particular place or activity where they just seem completely in their element?

Two weekends ago, Omelet competed in Air Retrieve for the first time after spending the last few months working on it during private sessions.

On his first day, we started at 10 feet and worked our way up to a successful grab at 14 feet. The next morning, we started at 12 feet and ended with a successful grab at 16 feet. It was really fun getting to take everything we’ve been working on into an actual trial setting and seeing him enjoy himself just as much there.

Those two successful runs earned him his first two legs toward his Air Retrieve Senior title, which feels like a pretty great way to kick off our 2027 season. More than anything, the weekend confirmed that this is something I want to prioritize more with him next year. We’ve spent a lot of time on distance jumping, but after seeing how much he enjoys Air Retrieve and how well he did during his first trial, I definitely want to give him more opportunities to work on it.

Unfortunately, living in New England means our time in the pool has come to an end for the calendar year just as we’re getting started. We’ll have to wait until the pools open again next year to pick up where we left off, but Air Retrieve will absolutely be a bigger part of our plans when they do.

For now, two Senior legs and a 16 foot grab feels like a pretty good place to leave off.

Only five more days until I get to marry my best friend.

The dogs already claimed him as dad years ago, so really, I’m just making my part official.

Five days until we say “I do” and then it’s right back to being outnumbered by dogs together.

Well, I officially have a new bear story, and this one takes the top spot for my most intense encounter to date.

Per our usual routine, the trio and I headed out for a midday hike today. Less than half a mile from the parking lot, Rayne started alert barking at the dense thicket alongside the trail. She eventually stopped, but a little farther down the trail she started again, this time switching much more firmly into what I know as her bear bark.

Just as I started scanning the brush, I heard a twig snap to my left.

The bear emerged suddenly and charged directly at us.

Omelet stood his ground and met the bear head-on, literally going forehead to forehead with him, while Rayne continued barking and holding her ground. I grabbed my bear alarm, activated it and threw it toward him while yelling, which caused him to back off long enough for us to start slowly retreating.

Then he charged again.

And once again, Omelet met him head-on while Rayne continued barking. I kept yelling and steadily backing us away until the bear finally retreated into the dense brush and we were able to get out of there safely.

I have a handful of bear stories from all the time we spend hiking, but nothing quite like this one.

Very thankful for Rayne, who knew something was there before I did and gave me a chance to be ready, then continued to hold her ground when it mattered. And Omelet, who met that bear’s charge not once, but twice, standing between him and the rest of us.

Twig, you get a gold star for simply being there for emotional support afterward as we collected ourselves and continued the rest of our loop.

Definitely not the hike I had planned for today, but incredibly grateful all four of us walked away safely.

Be safe out there, everyone. Pay attention when your dogs tell you something is there, carry the appropriate safety equipment, and know what to do if an encounter happens.

I lost another piece of my heart today.

Just a month shy of his fourteenth birthday, Hendrix left this world today to join his brothers over the rainbow bridge.

He was truly one of a kind. Despite starting his life as a junkyard dog down south, initially slated for death because of an expensive-to-treat disease before being rescued, he became the most solid, balanced, well-behaved dog. He was simply exceptional, and he remained that way for the entirety of his life as a member of our pack.

Hendrix helped me raise countless puppies over the years, including three of our own and many fosters. He was patient and kind, but also exceptional at delivering an appropriate correction when one was needed. Dogs naturally looked to him as a leader, role model, and compass for good behavior. Hendrix barely had to do anything. He could simply stand there and dogs would flock to him, greeting him with wagging tails and quick licks to his face.

There wasn’t a single person Hendrix didn’t love, and I honestly don’t think there was a single person who didn’t love him back.

He hated walks, loved naps, and worshipped food. Every night, he received a single turkey tendon, which eventually became just about the only thing that could still convince him to trot around toward the end of his life.

He rebounded time and time again from multiple ailments, but over the weekend, it became clear that this was one battle he wasn’t going to win. It was time to let him go.

The revolving door that is life always wins in the end. Although I am a little more broken in his absence, I am incredibly honored to have shared my life with such an exceptional dog.

Losing three dogs in less than two years is soul crushing, but I have absolutely no regrets. Thank you for all of the memories, Hendrix. I will cherish each and every one, including this beautiful spring day when I took you (and Rayne) to have photos taken by the incredibly talented Lexi Selden of @roamingupnorth
