It’s hard to believe that you can camp in places like this for FREE in BC...

But, it’s important to remember that we share these spaces with bears and other wildlife. Keeping a BARE campsite is the best way to keep them safe for everyone. 🐻❤️

Scroll through for a few really simple tips to keep in mind on your next car camping trip ➡️

#vancouverisland #explorevancouverisland #beautifulbc #camping #campingbc

🐻 When you get to camp, check for signs of recent bear activity (fresh 💩 or tracks, tree markings, etc) before committing to the spot

🐾 Keep your dog on leash, it really is the most important thing you can do to reduce human-bear conflict!

🥘 Don’t leave food out - even if you’re not going far from camp. Clean up, and toss food + garbage back in your vehicle

🍝😋

🍳 Don’t forget to clean your stove if you plan on leaving it out at camp while not in use!

🌊 Dump your grey water at least 50m away from camp and water bodies (strain out any debris first and put it in the garbage!)

⛺️ Don’t eat or bring food into your tent!

A BARE camp:

🧴 Secure ALL attractants (anything with a scent) in your vehicle when not in use

Is there anything else you’d add to the list? taken in Vancouver Island, BC, Canada by @trailsofroo

If you needed plans this weekend, you’re welcome 🤭 If you ask us, it’s the best time of year to head to Comox Lake to check out the trails, go for a paddle or just enjoy the view.

An incredibly special place that’s been on our “parks to visit” list for a very very long time. It exceeded all of our expectations! 🏔️🌊

A few things to note:
- To get here, we’d recommend 4x4, at the very least, SOLID tires. You need to be self sufficient, there isn’t much around. No service.
- Dogs are welcome but MUST be on leash.
- There are two campgrounds, camping is $18/night for BC residents. These are the ONLY places you can camp in the area.
- One of the camps close around September to reduce human-bear conflict during salmon season.
- The park closes in the winter.

Wild horses 🤍

🥹😂

The water was freezing but after a week of no shower this was NEEDED

Canned chili from a gas station grocery store and grilled cheese. You really can’t beat it.

SO WINDY

Working remote from the camper is all fun and games until you’re in a meeting and your dogs foot hits you in the side of the head 🙃 taken in British Columbia by @trailsofroo

This is your sign to check out the underrated but equally as impressive provincial parks in BC 🏔️🌊

⚠️ These clips were taken in June, and don’t necessarily reflect current conditions due to this summers wildfires. Check restrictions/local advisories before visiting.

🤯🤯 I couldn’t believe how close she got! She hung around within view from our camp for OVER 12 HOURS! We went to bed hearing her blows and when we woke up she had finally moved on from the area. This was one of the most incredible humpback encounters we’ve ever had 🐋

This was the best decision we could have made for us 🏔️🌊 We booked all of the cabins (three total) at @thecottagesatshoalbay on East Thurlow Island (only accessible by boat or float plane)!

We cooked together in the outdoor kitchen, played games, sat around the campfire, made pizza in the wood fired oven, swam in the ocean and warmed up in the sauna, watched the Perseid Meteor shower, relaxed, laughed, and made so so many amazing memories. What an incredible place. Our only regret is not staying longer.

East Thurlow Island is part of the Discovery Islands (between Vancouver Island and mainland British Columbia). The Shoal Bay Cottages are one of few dwellings on the Island.

We chartered a water taxi with Blind Channel Water Taxi from Campbell River. Our captain was incredible, and took us on a sight seeing tour on the way there.

A channel through the Discovery Islands, on the way to Shoal Bay. Just south of Philips Arm.

Shoal Bay Cottages from the water.

The government dock where we arrived to for our stay at Shoal Bay. We wore our wedding fits (ceremony was earlier that day) on the boat but quickly changed into shorts and baggy t-shirts once we arrived 😋 This is a public space so boats travelling through the area pull in and out of here throughout the day.

👰🏽‍♀️🤵🏻🐕

First view of one of the cottages from the dock 🥹

Our favourite of the three cabins 🤭 This is the “Robin” cabin. We all gathered here for morning coffee, games, dinner and hang outs.

The “Raven” cabin and the sauna/outdoor shower 🚿

SO cozy 🤍 I dream of coming back here in the rainy season and sitting infront of the fire with a hot coffee and the fire going 🤌🏼

The outdoor shower WITH HOT WATER 🤌🏼

We were so lucky that we were able to have campfires! Usually this time of year there’s a ban.

The communal outdoor kitchen where we spent so much of our time. This was such a great space!

Homemade sourdough pizza made in the wood-fired oven 🤌🏼 Still drooling…

🤍

We spent some time kayaking in the bay 🛶

View from the beautiful garden on site. A real highlight was wandering through here and the greenhouse.. and all the freshly picked flowers in the cabins 🌸

Sand dunes in 📍British Columbia? Who knew 🤭 This short but incredible trail is located in the Chilcotin region. Hiking up hill in sand was tough, but we got to watch the sunset from here so it was well worth it.

PS. Does anyone else’s dog try to eat sand the way they eat snow? 😂

The humpback jump at the end 🥹🐋 This was such a fun experience for us, despite having been on many ferries before!

This is everything we think you should know before taking this ferry:

⛴️ Our ride cost $807.60 for 2 x passengers and 1 x over-height vehicle (truck camper). It cost us ~$950 to drive from Campbell River to Bella Coola (including cost of the ferry from Nanaimo to Vancouver…and quite a few side quests along the way).

🗓️ Book in advance! There are limited dates and we found summer months booked up really quickly.

🍔 There’s one small restaurant, and it opens for an hour or two at breakfast and lunch. I wish we packed our own food because choices were limited and expensive.

🐶 Dogs aren’t allowed in any passenger areas, they have to stay in your vehicle. We were so glad to have the camper for our dog! If conditions are good, they allow passengers to go down to their vehicles for 10 mins or so every few hours. There is one small “pee pad” area, but our dog wouldn’t use it. We were glad we limited water that morning/night before.

🌊 If you get motion sick like me, take a gravol before boarding. It gets pretty rocky once you enter open water!

💻 There’s no cell signal or wifi

SO tell me, would you take this 10-hour ferry ride?

A local favourite that’s totally worth the drive ☕🌊 Finding good local coffee on a road trip is one of our favourite things about being on the road, so we absolutely love that we have the opportunity to share our go-to spot with anyone who might be travelling through our neck of the woods. Fogg Dukkers is a locally owned coffee shop along the seawalk in Campbell River, BC, they make an excellent iced oat latte and the perfect spicy chai. It’s also one of the best spots in town to spot whales or just watch the boats go by!

@kaltire is celebrating the off-the-beaten path, small, Canadian-owned businesses that make road trips across Canada so memorable. If you check out the pinned post on their profile, you’ll see they’ve compiled a list those Hidden Gems across the country, and if you nominate your own, you can enter for a chance to WIN a set of 4 tires or a Kal Tire prize pack!
