This dude got 135lb for the first time on bench, maxed out the Vert, and hit 50k makes πŸ€ all in like a 24 hour span πŸ˜‚
Connor has been making MASSIVE strides, the last few weeks especially. Jumping higher, stronger each week, more makes more steals more blocks..etc etc.
All because he's been consistent - especially DURING the season. Even with practices and games he still made time to get to the gym at least once a week. Killed it more & more on the court each week and now in the off season - all of that work & time is coming fruition and he's making huge leaps! Everything up & he's just getting started πŸ†™πŸ’―πŸ”₯

Weekly Self Care for Weekly Hoopers πŸ€
~~~~~~~
You could call most of this mobility i suppose, i'm not a big fan of classifying things as mobility, strength, injury prevention etc. because at the end of the day you are trying to fill all the boxes as efficiently as possibly. Over the years these are movements i've found to check those boxes very quickly so i don't have to spend hours at the gym.
~~~~~~~
Most of these are geared towards hooping but they work just as well for golf & volleyball.
~~~~~~~
in about 10 minutes we hit great work for the ankle (most common weakness i see in basketball players), stretched the quad super helpful for jumping and deceleration, hips/glutes/t-spine rotation (back injuries in basketball are most often going to be tied to this area being too tight), adductor work πŸ’―, and we woke up the feet as well 🦢🏼.
~~~~~~
Try any of these & DM if you have any questions!

i've never seen a TWELVE YEAR OLD do this 🀯🀯
-------
this video doesn't do it justice because it was his last rep and he cheated (just a little), but before i recorded they were πŸ”₯πŸ”₯. he was doing box jumps at 40 inches and randomly said "i wonder if i can do this on one leg" and then just started doing perfect 40in jumps with one leg πŸ˜‚ which is bonkers!
-------
anyways at 12 years old everything is about having fun & exploring & learning - so when a kid says he wants to try something it's worth it to go down that path πŸ’―

Single leg deadlifts are one of my favorite leg exercises but i also feel like it's often misunderstood.
------
A lot of people use it for balance, and me no likey that πŸ™‚β€β†”οΈ i almost always hold on to something. to get a good load on it, it becomes too hard to also balance and do it correctly. Holding on lets me focus on stabilizing the right way. "Never half ass two things, when you can whole ass one thing" has been a motto of mine for a long time.
------
2) I see a lot of people keep their leg way too straight. People do this because they feel it in their hamstring that way, the problem is you feel it in your hamstring because you are just making it insanely tight. You actually want to keep a decent knee bend because this allows the hamstring to STRETCH, which is good πŸ‘πŸΌ it also allows the glute to come in to play more, also good 😊
------
3) majority of people let their hip open up. the goal is to keep your hip CLOSED. this lets your adductors & glute do what they are supposed to do. if your hip is open, it shuts off those tiny muscles that we really want involved in a movement like this πŸ’―

anyways, exercise of the day! see you tomorrow 🫑 by @train.with.toonchi

Add this change to improve single arm work πŸ’ͺ🏼 i'm always trying to find ways to make each set more beneficial.. and often times on single arm work I use it as chance to improve my mobility/stretch, and smash the core πŸ”₯
--------
why? the weight is already lighter than it would be if i was using two arms, and it will naturally be more controlled since i only have the weight on one side of my body. So i use this opportunity to really exaggerate the range of motion πŸ’― Which does two things, it allows me to get a fantastic stretch thru my shoulders and thoracic spine (upper back). and the slower speed allows me to really think about my core and use it as much as i can πŸ’―
-------
We do a lot of crunches and planks sure, but that makes them isolated. in life, we almost never use the core in isolated incidents, it's always connected to a motion. & i'm all about working the body in ways that apply as much to our daily motions as possible.
------
Any questions hit me up. Save it, Try it ✌🏼

great stretch-ercise for the foot & knees πŸ’―

doesn't take many reps just 3-5 each side, focus on driving your knee and rolling on your foot as much as you can. the goal is smooth, but it's hard πŸ₯΅

in sports, the little things in the gym seem to go the furthest and let us play the most πŸ‘»πŸ€™πŸΌ by @train.with.toonchi

Most of my value as a trainer comes from being able to take something simple (like lunges) and apply it in ways that make it much more efficient for whoever (whomever?) i am training.

Here's my 3 favorite lunge variations for basketball players & why:

1) Stupid Lunges (chose the name myself) - 2 forward lunges followed by 1 reverse lunge. rinse & repeat. stay smooth.

2) Duck Lunges - go slow, stay low, while keeping everything level and in a line. focus on driving the knee to the ground. you want to stretch the quad and use the hips.

3) Swing lunges - Forward lunge to reverse lunge continuously.

These may just seem like tougher options for a lunge, but there is extra emphasis on balance, inside foot pressure, hips, adductors, and they mimic movements you'd be doing on a basketball court (example: decelerating).

The goal on all of these is to be smooth & be aware of your foot pressure. The first time people do these movements they'll want to open up the hips more than they need to and will want to use the outside of their foot. Instead - make your hips move and work, and find your balance with the INSIDE of your feet, not the outside.

Give them a shot, get back to me πŸ€™πŸΌ

Does a 10-12 year old NEED to train? Nope πŸ™‚β€β†”οΈ
But can they? 100 percent πŸ’―
--------
Sometimes people trains kids like adults, or older kids, and that's no bueno. When you're that young, you're trying to accomplish three things

1) you want to imitate natural movements, i call them playground movements. So running, jumping, climbing, etc. This is pretty much all they need πŸ”₯
2) have FUN. associate a positive relationship with the gym at a young age.
3) understanding what they are doing and how their body moves πŸ’―

Very simple, very fun. Any kind of games/competition are a great bonus. Kids rock 🀘🏼 #Kids #ForTheKids #Training #WorkoutsForKids taken in Powell, Ohio by @train.with.toonchi
