So you’ve decided you want that chin-up. Woo, genuinely exciting. Now here’s the only thing that actually matters next: don’t build a whole new routine around it. Find the slot that’s already sitting in your week. Already at the gym for your usual class? Tack it on before or after. Taking the kids to a park with an outdoor gym while they play? That’s your twenty minutes, right there. Start with just the one, that’s the whole trick.

If you want us to actually walk you through exactly how to do this, our 7 Day Get Started begins tomorrow.

None of these are complicated. That’s sort of the point, complicated is easy to quit on, and none of these ideas need discipline of steel, just a bit of stubbornness on the days it would be easier not to bother.

We’re breaking down the path to your own chin-up, sharing it step by step, hopefully some inspo along the way too. Follow along, more like this every week.

Somewhere along the way, ā€œfitnessā€ became endless and directionless, just showing up and doing something for an hour and calling it a win. There’s nothing wrong with that. But there’s something different about training toward an actual skill, a real finish line you can actually see coming.

And here’s the part that’s easy to miss: chasing a skill like this is genuinely fun. Not ā€œgood for youā€ fun, actually fun, the kind where you’re excited to try the next progression rather than just getting the session over with.

We’re breaking down the path to your own chin-up, sharing it step by step, hopefully some inspo along the way too.

There’s a very specific kind of confidence that doesn’t automatically transfer. You can be completely on top of everything else in your life and still stand there staring at a bar with no idea what to do first.

That’s not you being unfit. That’s just nobody ever actually showing you where to start with this particular thing.

We’re breaking down the path to your own chin-up, sharing it step by step, hopefully some inspo along the way too.

You don’t need tip two hundred and one. You need five minutes, a bar, and to actually put the phone down, that’s it, that’s the whole secret.

If you’ve got a folder full of saved fitness videos and still haven’t started, this one’s for you.

Last year I set myself one goal: a full unassisted set of chin-ups. Thought it’d take a few months.

A year later I’m down to one very very thin resistance band to assist me, and I’m not going to pretend that’s not annoying, because it is.

With Cris, I found a path that actually keeps working, even through injuries and plateaus that used to be exactly where I’d quit before. Now I just adjust and keep going instead of starting over every time something gets in the way.

Still not there. Still annoyed some days. Still enjoying it more than I expected to.

This started as my own goal. Now we want to help you get your chin up goal too.

Take a breath, none of these need to be a big production. Every one of them takes about ten minutes, not a whole weekend cleared out for it. And the relief isn’t really about finishing everything, it’s just getting it out of your head and finally seeing what’s actually left.

It’s called a chin-up.

But ā€œget your chin over the barā€ might be one of the least helpful cues when you’re learning one.

Because what happens?

Chin reaches.
Shoulders creep up.
Arms do everything they possibly can.

Instead, try thinking: bring your chest to the bar.

Start with a low ring row or bar where your feet can stay on the ground. Pull your chest towards it, pause, then lower slowly.

3 sets of 5–8.

You’re teaching your body the shape and pulling pattern you’ll eventually need when you take your feet off the floor.

No rings? A low bar or suspension trainer works too.

We’re breaking the road to your first chin-up down exactly like this. One skill at a time.

Something for chin-up beginners is coming this October.

These five never leave the program, not because they look impressive, they don’t, but because they’re still the ones actually moving the needle. If your list looks nothing like this, it’s worth a look. Follow along, we’re building this whole thing in public.

Step 1: find a bar. A gym bar, a monkey bar at the park, anything you can wrap your hands around. Hang from it for as long as you can. Don’t try to pull yourself up. Just hang and breathe and let your body get comfortable with being there. Time yourself.

Step 2: write that number down. That is your baseline. That number is going to change and you are going to want to remember where you started.

That’s it for today. Just those two things.

PS. We’re breaking the whole path down into steps exactly like this, one at a time, so it never feels like too much at once. Come on this journey with us.

We’re opening something in October. taken in Sydney, Australia by @trainunassisted

Not a life goal. Something physical. Something you’ve watched someone else do and thought, quietly, I wish I could do that.

Sit with it for a second.

What’s actually stopping you? Not the surface answer. The real one. Is it that you don’t know where to start? That you’ve tried before and it didn’t stick?

And then imagine what it would feel like to actually get there. Not just the moment of doing it, but the quieter thing underneath. The shift in how you see yourself.

That feeling is what we’re building toward.

Drop yours in the comments. We read every one.

Tor. Then Cris. Then both of us.

Something’s coming together behind the scenes, and it’s got both our legs in it.
