From the Arctic Circle to the Mediterranean coast – these routes show how much of Europe’s beauty you can reach by train. Each one is a journey worth taking at least once in your life. 🌍

🇬🇧 Inverness → The Highlands
Travel into the rugged north of Scotland, where lochs, valleys, and mountains stretch as far as you can see. The line from Inverness takes you deep into the Highlands.

🇮🇹 Bologna → Lecce (Apulia)
This long route runs the length of Italy, from the heart of Emilia-Romagna to the sun-soaked heel of the country. You’ll pass vineyards, coastal towns, and olive fields before arriving in Lecce – a city known for its warm light and baroque streets.

🇸🇪 Stockholm → Narvik
One of Europe’s most dramatic train journeys – connecting Sweden’s capital with the Arctic north. Watch the scenery shift from forests and lakes to snow-covered peaks as you cross into Norway, ending by the fjords of Narvik.

🇪🇸 Madrid → Cádiz
A journey from Spain’s capital to the Atlantic coast, crossing olive groves, rolling plains, and the vibrant heart of Andalusia. By the time you reach Cádiz, the air smells of salt and orange blossoms – and life moves just a little slower.

🇦🇹 Vienna → Split
An overnight route linking Central Europe with the Adriatic. Leave Vienna in the evening and wake up to sunlight and palm trees – the perfect mix of alpine views and Mediterranean atmosphere.

Now the only question that remains is: Which one will you start with? 😍

Off to the beach – by train only 🚅🌊

Sicily doesn't have the densest rail network in Italy, but it covers the coastline surprisingly well! We’re here to show you how to visit some beautiful beaches and towns, no rental car needed!

🐚 Fontane Bianche
A train from Catania will take you to a small station just south of Syracuse, and within a ten-minute walk you’ll be standing in front of one of the most beautiful sandy beaches on the island! Think pine trees framing the shore and water that stays warm well into September.

🌊 Giardini Naxos
Along the Taormina area, there are many beaches to discover, depending if you like it less or more lively! The little Saia Porticciolo beach sits right by the station Taormina-Giardini, it’s a quieter alternative to the busier Recanati stretch further along.

🏖️ Cefalù
In Cefalù, you step off the train and you're already in the old town, all narrow lanes and golden stone leading straight down to the sand beneath the Norman cathedral. The medieval center is one of the prettiest on the island, and the beach happens to be right there too. It can get crowded very easily though!

🏛️ Ortigia
This isn't a beach stop, but it earns its place on the list. Ortigia is Syracuse's old town and it sits on its own little island! It’s about a fifteen-minute walk from the station through Greek temples, a Baroque cathedral square, and a morning market.

🍋 Trapani
On the western tip of Sicily, Trapani station puts you right at the edge of a historic center built almost entirely from pale stone, with the old harbor and views out toward the Egadi Islands just a few streets away. Definitely for a slow-paced day, if that’s what you’re looking for!

Search your dates on traivelling.com and book your train – Sicily in summer fills up fast 🌿🚅

Denmark has a lot more to offer than Copenhagen! Here are five places (of many!) worth a train ride from the capital 🫶🏼

🚅 Aarhus
~3 hours from Copenhagen, direct, hourly
Denmark's second biggest city and still somewhat underrated. Visit for art museums, the lively Latin Quarter, street food markets, and a very modernized harbor. Feels like a mix of small town and big city!

🚅 Helsingør
~55 minutes from Copenhagen, every 20 minutes
Most people come for Kronborg Castle, the one that inspired Shakespeare's Hamlet. Apart from that, you'll find cobblestone streets, colourful merchant houses and a great maritime museum.

🚅 Roskilde
~30 minutes from Copenhagen, several times per hour
Once the capital of Denmark, now a quiet town with quite an astonishing history. The cathedral holds the remains of 38 Danish kings and queens, the Viking Ship Museum lets you get up close with actual ships pulled from the fjord, and the harbour is lovely for a slow afternoon walk.

🚅 Skagen
~8 hours from Copenhagen, 1-2 changes
It’s a journey for sure, but it’s absolutely worth it! At the very tip of Denmark, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea meet in a place called Grenen and you can literally stand with one foot in each. Plus: iconic yellow houses, windswept dunes, and a long tradition of painters drawn by the extraordinary light. Two birds with one stone: Stop in Aarhus on the way there!

🚅 Hillerød
~40 minutes from Copenhagen, every 10–20 minutes
Hillerød might be the easiest escape from Copenhagen. Frederiksborg Castle sits on three small islands in the middle of a lake, surrounded by baroque gardens. It’s the largest Renaissance castle in Scandinavia! The S-train drops you practically at the doorstep.

Hamburg → Copenhagen is a direct train connection with multiple departures daily. Here’s where you’ll pass through within the five hours the journey takes:

Hamburg
Your starting point: Germany’s beloved harbor city. Sailboats on the Alster, the Elbphilharmonie on the waterfront, and a huuuge main station from 1906.

🚅➡️ 1h30min

Schleswig
A quiet gem in northern Germany. Cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, and the Schlei fjord with its still waters.

🚅➡️ 37min

Padborg
The border crossing into Denmark – there’s not necessarily much happening here, but there’s a lot of fresh air, green fields and farmhouses!

🚅➡️ 43min

Kolding
A Danish harbour town with a medieval castle right by the lake, great for a stroll if you do want to split your journey to Copenhagen.

🚅➡️ 40min

Odense
Cute colorful houses, cobblestone squares and riverside paddleboarding. And also, Hans Christian Andersen was born here.

🚅➡️ 43min

Ringsted
It doesn’t seem like much, but Ringsted actually has one of Denmark’s oldest churches and a medieval centre!

🚅➡️ 29min

Copenhagen
Well, what do we have to say? Who doesn’t want to go to Copenhagen and experience the canals, the colored houses, bikes everywhere, the food, the people?

We’d say it’s time to book that train! Getting to Hamburg is really easy as well – there are a bunch of night trains to choose from. Head to traivelling.com or get the Traivelling App and book your train journey to Copenhagen quick and easy 🚅🌿☺️ by @traivelling

Last week we showed you how to get to Barcelona by train – but why stop there? 😍☀️🚅

Here's where to head next:

Valencia // 2h 45 · AVE · 12x daily
Valencia kind of has the same beach city mixture that Barcelona has, but more compact and with that, it feels a little calmer and more of a lived-in place.

Madrid // 2h 30 · AVE · 40x daily
The most connected city in Spain, which makes sense, seeing as it’s the countries’ capital. A very enjoyable one at that! But you’ll be away from the beach, so going in midsummer heat is a choice! If you don’t love hot temperatures, opt for spring or autumn for a softer experience.

Marseille // 4h 35 · TGV · 2-3x daily
So this might be an option especially for people looking to explore more of Europe in one trip, or wanting to take a slow route back from Barcelona! And the Côte d’Azur has a lot to offer! Marseille is a great stop.

Montpellier // 3h 30 · TGV · 3-4x daily
Montpellier is a bit closer to Barcelona that Marseille, and is also a bit calmer. Again a good stop if you’re doing an Interrail round trip (in which case you should definitely check out our Interrail pricing comparison on traivelling.com while booking).

Zaragoza // 1h 35 · AVE · 28x daily
Back to Spain! Zaragoza is not a hidden gem anymore, but some say it’s still underrated! You can reach it quickly from Barcelona, so it would also make for a great day trip during your stay.

Sooooo… Ready to book your trip to Spain? Book all trains to and from Barcelona via traivelling.com. Happy traivels! ☺️🚅🌿 taken in Barcelona by @traivelling
