Sometimes your child is taking forever to do something you’ve already asked three times and you can feel yourself getting sharper.

You hear your voice get loud. You say, “Why does everything have to be so hard?” Then once it’s over, you replay the moment and tell yourself you handled it terribly.

Regret can help you decide what you want to do differently. Shame just keeps you stuck in “I’m a bad parent”

You don’t have to be playful every time your child resists. But you can start by catching yourself in one moment today before you get louder: take one breath, get close, and try a lighter tone or a silly comment that puts you both on the same team. The expectation can stay. You’re just making it easier to move through it together.

And if you already snapped, you can come back and repair: “I got frustrated and raised my voice. I’m sorry. Let me try that again.”

Want help finding the words for those hard moments?

These aren’t magic words that make a hard moment disappear.

They’re reminders your child can carry with them while they’re still upset: I’m loved. I can be held accountable. This moment doesn’t define me.

And sometimes we won’t get the words right in the moment.

We can come back to them later and remind our child: “I was upset about what happened, and I still love you. We can figure it out together.”

To the parents who said the first version of this story felt like a fairytale... you’re right. Some grandparents won’t apologize, reflect, or back down.

That’s why I made this version. A parent can still lead when the grandparent doesn’t respond maturely.

You don’t have to convince them. Restate the boundary, move your child and the activity, and end the visit if needed.

Later, help your child make sense of what happened and practice clearer words... without making them responsible for an adult ignoring their “no.”

Your child needs to know you’ll help them with their words and take their boundary seriously.

Oh yeah, and leadership doesn’t depend on another adult agreeing with you 😉

There are no bad kids... just kids still learning…and grownups still learning to pause, reflect, and listen for what the behavior is telling us.

🔽 Comment CLASS to understand your child’s behavior better and learn how to to lead by listening to what they aren’t telling us.

It’s hard to watch your tween or teen get hurt by a friend, come home acting unlike themselves, or get pulled into something unsafe.

You can name what you’re noticing without attacking the friend they care about. And when safety is the concern, you can hold a clear boundary while making sure your child knows they can still call you for help.

If you’re navigating one of these situations and aren’t sure what to say next, AskJulie is here for the real-life moments. Private text coaching, whenever you need it.
