I have many thoughts but only some brain to put it up...so I'm sorry if there were many unconnected words.. I teach this in class every day and it's becoming more and more difficult to continue talking about Gender and the policing of transgender individuals has always been tied to the colonial project (look up anthropology and "berdache"). Today, the state seeks to legitimise, narrowly who should get rights. Tomorrow they will say women with 1% more testosterone aren't allowed into women's only spaces. Body politics is deeply connected to the imperial project- to cleanse, control, contain and curate a working population that will contribute to capitalist growth :) #billtohkacchahaiji by @transformsouthasia

First academic conference alert! We were recently at the Engender Conference 2023, where Sam and Jo presented the making of and relevance of a tool like Trans/form to understand Anti Trans Violence in India (+South Asia), especially in multiple layered contexts- 🔺intersecting social identities, 🔺webs of privilege power and violence, 🔺a lack of intersectionality in archival and research work on trans communities, 🔺trans people not being taken seriously when they report violence and 🔺law/policy measures that don't end up serving these intersecting communities. Big love to the Engender Team for having us, and the encouraging comments and questions we received after. We left thinking about how we can further out work to include other South Asian contexts beyond India, and how the way we use categorisation to address violence meets with queer theory, that has historically pushed against categorisation. #engenderconference #transform #antitransviolence by @transformsouthasia

Final dispatches from a conversation that's still giving us nuggets to chew on. We had a fair few grievances to air with academia and our complex relationship of simultaneously being within it and challenging some of the fundamentals it was built on. Listen, if you haven't already. Have you heard our latest episode yet? Though recorded a while ago, when transform was just getting started, it is an incredible look into the many considerations that go into building a transfeminist project that simultaneously challenges mainstream academia and activism. And the many minute, profound, hilarious detours along the way. Listen in when you can :) by @transformsouthasia
What does it take to translate feminist dreams into practice while still navigating the same structures that necessitate this dreaming? How do we think differently about design, knowledge, consent and access when doing so? What of our own lived experiences do we constantly have to learn and unlearn while also grappling with the multiverses of Google Sheets? We got a chance this episode to sit down with Jo and Mrinalini, co-producers of trans/form - a pedagogical tool about the violence faced by trans people in South Asia. Fuelled by the very familiar 'let's do a project together' energy that many of us relate to, they both walk us through the complexities of actually building something that collates diverse lived experiences and knowledges, across language and articulation, to end up with something that is truly accessible, co-created and dynamic. From the logo to cat videos to research associates to consent pop-ups and delegation - every single element of the tool is a carefully considered political choice - and each seeks to subvert the ways in which the world as a whole, and academia in particular, seeks to engage with knowledges of marginalised people. It is a generous, intimate chat about the brick by brick building of feminist realities, and all the hilarious, heartbreaking, affirming detours along the way. Go listen :) by @transformsouthasia
Trans/form supports the demands led by @transrightsnowcollective for horizontal reservations to ensure trans people’s access to public employment and educational institutions, on State and Central levels. Even though the NALSA judgment of 2014 directed the Central and State governments to provide reservations to trans people, only three states have done so, of which Karnataka is the first and only one to implement horizontal reservations. Horizontal reservations, currently offered to women and people with disabilities, ensure that a certain percentage of seats and posts are reserved for these candidates across vertical (caste) categories. The NALSA judgment also called for trans people to be treated as Socially and Educationally Backward Classes, which risks clubbing them with people of Other Backward Castes (OBC). The trans community is not homogenous: trans people have various caste, class, regional, and economic backgrounds, and their lived experiences differ and depend on these identities too. For example, a Dalit trans woman is doubly-oppressed and may need reservations in both categories, which vertical reservations do not provide. Therefore, vertical reservations not only erase trans people’s intersectional experiences but also force them to compete with candidates from oppressed-castes for limited seats. Horizontal reservations, on the other hand, will ensure that trans people have a set number of seats reserved for them in every caste category, thereby opening up access to education and employment opportunities. It is at the heart of the work we do at trans/form to recognise these intersections, and address violence based on the fact that we experience violence differently because of our multiple, layered oppressions and privileges. Please do read more from the work @gracebanu has been putting out, and support #horizontalreservationfortrans by @transformsouthasia
Call for Research Assistants! [Closed] Transform (www.transformsouthasia.com - link in bio) is a pedagogical tool in the form of a website exploring the intersections of violence against trans and intersex queer people in South Asia. It can be used to teach intersectionality, document trans and intersex queer experiences and create a dynamic resource that can be used to move towards a transformative justice system based on education. The project is an award-winning intervention in evidence-building mechanisms and the conversation on the structural nature of violence in the country and in extension, the world. The framework of the tool has already been made, and it has been reviewed by 30 trans and intersex people from India, South Africa and the UK. For the current phase of the project, we are looking for Research Assistants with lucid but detailed writing skills. They will help us populate the content sections of the tool by writing about the violence faced by trans people, alongside adding relevant footnotes and references to make it a rich resource. Time Commitment: 1-2 Months depending on speed of work and need (maximum 6 hours per week - we are flexible with deadlines) Payment: INR 8,000/ month and credits where due for the research [please check the team section on our website] If you are interested in helping us make this resource well-researched, trans centred and dynamic, send us your CV and ONLY ONE writing sample (500-1500 words max) that shows us a connection to the kind of work we are doing, and your research background/interests to transformsouthasia@gmail.com. There will be an "interview"/conversation with Transform producers Jo and Mrinalini after the shortlist based on the CV/sample. Supported by The International Trans Fund **This position is only open to trans, intersex and queer people. Please do not apply if you are not trans, intersex or queer [you do not have to disclose, we trust the applicant to make a responsible decision] ***Please note that the content we will be working with can be triggering for trans, intersex and queer people, but there will be a discussion on working with the material in as safe a way as possible by @transformsouthasia
