In a translated feature from our latest issue, a Colombian journalist travels to the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic to meet the embattled people struggling against a 50-year displacement from their homeland.

Today, nearly 200,000 Sahrawis live in refugee camps near Tindouf, Algeria. They were forcibly displaced from Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, after Morocco invaded in 1975.

“The refugee camps are divided into five wilayat that, in turn, are made up of districts called dawair. Each one is separated from the next by impenetrable seas of sand where finding some shade feels like a distant dream. A narrow road connects the wilayat. The smouldering hot tarmac produces a hypnotic shimmer in the purest colours of the desert: a palette of yellows and oranges that Sahrawis can distinguish with the meticulousness of a professional colour theorist.”

Today, our literary space hosted a professional discussion titled “Stories Without Borders: What Stories Captivate Readers Around the World?”
The discussion brought together Tra May, editor of a contemporary literary publication, writer Baqytgul Sarmekova, and our publishing house editor Balgyn Adilbay. The participants discussed how Kazakhstani authors can enter the international market, as well as the role of publishing, translation, and literary agents in this process.

Join us on Wednesday 30 September in Madrid to explore the process of reporting and translating a feature about the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, and the people living in forced exile from their homeland of Western Sahara.

Originally published in Spanish by Revista LATE and translated into English for Issue #4 of Translator, Giovanny Jaramillo Rojas’ reportage explores the history, daily life and more than 50-year political struggle of the Sahrawis.

At our Issue #4 launch party on Wednesday, Kaisa Saarinen will read her translation of "Castle in the Clouds" – Anni Pasanen’s story about Finland’s homegrown cannabis industry.

Kaisa is a researcher, author and translator whose work has focused on the political economy of rubber fetishism, country girls lost in big cities & other underdogs, and post-war Japanese avant garde poetry. Her translations of Shuuji Terayama's tanka have previously appeared in the Poetry Review and MUBI Notebook.'

There's a particular kind of translation that happens without words. On September 9th, Mariia Petrovska (@mariampetrovska ) brings hers to Issue #4 – the bandura, Ukraine's national instrument, played with a virtuosity that's earned her recognition across the UK and beyond.

Mariia left Ukraine for the UK after the Russian invasion, going on to graduate with First Class Honours from BIMM Manchester. She's since performed at the Eurovision Village stage, London's Finborough Theatre, and this year's Ukraine Unbroken at Arcola Theatre – carrying Ukrainian culture and testimony with her through Cultural Forces and her own initiative, People's Territory of Happiness.

Her performance at the launch is a tribute to the Ukrainian journalism we've translated in our latest issue.

Reading at Issue #4 launch: Francisco García (@francisco_garciadf ), London-based writer and journalist whose long-form features, essays and investigations appear regularly in the Financial Times, The Guardian, and the London Review of Books, among others. He currently serves as Senior Writer for The Observer.

We asked Francisco to read for a reason: his own writing on lithium mining has traced exactly the kind of complexity Western coverage tends to flatten.

Francisco will read from Coilín O'Connor's translation of "Over Our Dead Bodies" – Alžběta Medková and Michal Špína's investigation into the Serbian uprising against government corruption, and Europe's first planned lithium mine, featured in Issue #4, out that night. It's a piece that asks what Western coverage so often misses: the complex, contested reality behind the geopolitics of extraction.
