AKON DROPPED A GEM THAT A LOT OF ARTISTS DON’T THINK ABOUT UNTIL IT’S TOO LATE. 🎯

During our trapLA sit-down, JessWest asked Akon about longevity in the music industry, and his answer was simple: being hot isn’t the goal — building something sustainable is.

Akon says every artist has a window. While everybody knows your name and the opportunities are coming, you shouldn’t just be enjoying the moment — you should already know what the next move is.

Because if you wait until the momentum slows down to figure out the business, somebody else is already taking your place.

The plan for AFTER you blow up needs to be made BEFORE you blow up. 💯

Artists, are you building a career… or just trying to have a moment? 👀

WE LOST ANOTHER VOICE THAT HELPED DEFINE AN ERA OF R&B. 🕊️

Freddie Jackson passed away Monday, October 5, just days after celebrating his birthday. His family confirmed the news through his official Instagram account. No cause of death has been announced.

From “Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)” to “You Are My Lady,” “Jam Tonight” and “Have You Ever Loved Somebody,” Freddie gave us records that became part of people’s relationships, weddings, cookouts and memories. His first two albums went platinum, and he became one of the signature voices of ’80s R&B and Quiet Storm radio.

Some artists make hits. Others make music that becomes part of people’s lives. Freddie Jackson did both.

Rest peacefully to a true R&B legend. 🕊️🙏🏾

BOXING QUESTIONS? Shawn Porter got those. BASEBALL QUESTIONS? That’s a different story. 😂⚾️

trapLA’s Luna caught up with former world champion Shawn Porter at The RightWay Foundation Celebrity Baseball Game and decided to see how much baseball knowledge he really had.

Let’s just say… some of these questions had the champ fighting for his life. 😭😂

All jokes aside, it was a dope day supporting The RightWay Foundation and the work they’re doing for transition-age foster youth in Los Angeles.

How many baseball questions do YOU think you could get right? 👀⚾️

AFTER MONTHS OF CRITICIZING L.A. RAP AND QUESTIONING WHAT WEST COAST LEGENDS ARE DOING FOR THE NEXT GENERATION… ICE CUBE FINALLY RESPONDED. 👀🍿

Cube pushed back on Dejon Paul’s criticism that established artists should be doing more for younger L.A. artists, explaining that he’s an independent artist still making music, movies, television and running the BIG3 — and that signing artists he doesn’t have the time to properly develop wouldn’t be fair to them.

Then it stopped being a debate. 😭

After Dejon called Cube a “studio gangsta,” Cube fired back, called him a frustrated and failing MC, and people in the replies started pulling up the streaming numbers from Dejon’s own music.

That’s what makes this whole conversation interesting: it’s easy to tell everybody else how they should use THEIR money, platform and relationships to build artists. It’s a lot harder to prove your own blueprint works.

And Cube’s other point might be the biggest one: “I don’t gatekeep… I’m not afraid of nobody’s talent.”

You can critique the state of L.A. music without constantly tearing down the artists, legends and people actually building in it.

Did Ice Cube have a point, or did he take it too far? 👀👇🏾 by @traplaxradio

REDDNTHABUILDING IS DONE JUST THINKING LIKE AN ARTIST — NOW HE’S THINKING LIKE A PRODUCER. 🎹🔥

During his What’s Hot L.A. interview with trapLA, ReddNThaBuilding explains why he wants to start taking more of a Dr. Dre-style approach to his projects — sitting back, producing the records and bringing different artists together instead of having to be the main voice on every song.

And when it comes to where he ranks behind the boards, he didn’t hesitate:

“I’m top 5… gotta be top 5 as far as producer out here.” 👀

Confidence or facts?

Who are YOUR Top 5 producers in L.A. right now? 🎹👇🏾

Y’ALL LET FIRST-WEEK NUMBERS DECIDE IF THE MUSIC IS GOOD NOW… AND THAT’S THE PROBLEM. 🥶🎯

Some of the projects we look back at as important West Coast records weren’t million-selling blockbusters the week they dropped.

Kendrick Lamar’s Section.80 did around 5,000 copies its first week. Imagine social media in 2011 treating that number like the final verdict on Kendrick Lamar. 😭

That’s what gets lost in all this first-week-sales talk.

First week measures the moment. It doesn’t always measure the music.

Some albums catch immediately. Some records take six months. Some take years before people understand what they were hearing. Some projects never become huge commercially but become cult classics that influence an entire generation.

Even YG’s My Krazy Life didn’t sell hundreds of thousands its first week — it opened around 61K and eventually went platinum. Today, you can’t really tell the story of 2010s L.A. rap without talking about that album.

So when an L.A. artist drops an album and somebody immediately screams “FLOP!” because of a first-week number, I always wonder:

Did you actually listen to the album… or did you just look at the scoreboard? 🤔

Because numbers tell you how fast something sold. TIME tells you if it was important. 🎯🌴

AKON SAYS BLACK PEOPLE COULD ALL RISE TOGETHER, BUT COMPETITION KEEPS US TEARING EACH OTHER DOWN 👀🎯

CAPTION

AKON JUST SAID SOMETHING A LOT OF PEOPLE PROBABLY DON’T WANT TO HEAR. 👀

During our conversation, Akon spoke about Black culture controlling its own messaging and how constantly competing with each other can keep everybody from progressing together.

His bigger point was simple: why does somebody else have to lose for you to win?

We see it in music, business, media and entertainment all the time. Instead of building ecosystems, sharing resources and creating opportunities together, sometimes more energy gets spent trying to tear down the next person.

Imagine what could happen if more of that competition turned into collaboration.

Do you agree with Akon — is division one of the biggest things holding us back? 👀👇🏾
