What a joy to keep discovering new places on annual trips to Bulgaria, to be amazed, then savor the memories.

Devetashka Cave and the nearby Krushuna Waterfalls – two more remarkable corners of this country.

Devetashka Cave sheltered people tens of thousands of years ago beneath its enormous natural skylights. In the 1950s, it became a fuel depot operated by the state enterprise Petrol, storing petroleum products for Bulgaria’s state reserves in 15 huge tanks. Their concrete foundations are still visible today.
Scenes from The Expendables 2 were also filmed here. The production rebuilt the bridge leading to the cave and left it as a gift to the local community.

Nearby, Krushuna Waterfalls cascade into turquoise pools nestled in lush greenery. Their color comes from the way light interacts with the clear water and pale limestone beneath it. taken in Devetashka Cave by @trashification

Second time around at Bezbog Peak, but this time we made it all the way to pristine Popovo Lake, which we only caught a glimpse of from afar two years ago.

Managed to confirm that we’re very much in the business of making excellent decisions while hiking. Amen to that taken in Попово езеро, 2234м / Popovo Lake, 7329ft by @trashification

One of the realest things I’ve seen in a while.

We spent a week exploring the Troyan area and accidentally stumbled upon In Their Place, a photography exhibition by Vladimir Karamazov @v.karamazov in Oreshak.

For the project, Karamazov spent more than a year working inside Belene Prison, meeting and photographing inmates, most of them serving life sentences. The exhibition brings together more than 80 photographs – documentary portraits, scenes from prison life, and personal stories – with a beautiful soundtrack that sets the scene.

Some of the photographs are huge and confrontational, others are tiny and have to be viewed through slide projectors, almost as if you were peeking through the small window of a prison cell. There are also video interviews with the inmates, which make the whole experience even more unsettling and morally complicated.

The whole thing hooked me and shook me to the core – captivating and disturbing at the same time.

I have to admit, I’m a sucker for something literal and straightforward when the depth is already there and doesn’t need to be uncovered layer by layer. You just dive straight in.

Raw photojournalism, an extremely difficult and controversial subject, and the kind of work that stays with you long after you leave.

*I even got a chance to meet the creator at the exhibition. Pure luck! taken in Oreshak, Lovech Province by @trashification

Happy Birthday in the sky.
My sister, Katya.
Pure emotion, life force, a whirlwind. Bright, magnetic, able to charm absolutely anyone. A combination of outgoing spirit, boundless openness, and staggering naivety. My complete opposite.

You spoke loudly, laughed loudly, loved fiercely, cried with your whole heart, and lived at full intensity. You couldn’t take life quietly. Restless, you chased adventure. Unfortunately, adventure often found you too.

You trusted what seemed like the easier way, but somehow it always led you straight into the eye of the storm. Every time, you brushed yourself off and got back up, only to end up there again.

For so long, you were incredibly lucky, yet so childlike, so wonderfully lost, utterly unprepared for this world.
The world revolved around you. It owed you. And it let you down. So did many of the people you welcomed with open arms. Those whose necks I’m ready to wring.

Why are the ones who leave my life always the ones with the greatest thirst for it? Why does this earth keep carrying so many worthless or vile people? They still wake up every morning and step into warm summer nights.

Katya died on my birthday in 2021, 3 days before I left for Israel.
The day before, we saw each other. A hug by the railway tracks. Plans for you to get your license and pick me up next time. You asked me to look into support programs in Israel for autistic children – for my niece, Nastya.

On my birthday, you were the first to call and tell me you were smiling in the subway, thinking about me.
I only wish that were the only feeling your memory carries now.

There is nothing else like this. We belonged to each other, no matter what, with an unquestioning devotion.

And alongside all that love, all the luck, there was always something inevitable about you. Something inescapable. It filled me with rage because it left me powerless. You never seemed to know the difference between flying and free-falling. Your eyes stayed fixed on the sky.

All I ever wanted was to tuck you into my pocket and protect you from every danger, every sorrow – from the whole world.
Now you’re above it.

I love you endlessly.
And I miss you every single day. by @trashification
