Some meetings are trash-talking with a slide deck.

I’ve run a few of those earlier in my career…probably taught the team more than I wanted to teach by doing that.

Three months carry the year. Look at this: since 1950, November, April, and December have averaged more combined S&P 500 return than the other nine months put together.

@fox13.news had me on yesterday to talk about Tampa Bay’s cost of living - up about 37% since 2019, the biggest increase of any major metro in the country.

In plain terms: a $5,000/month household in 2019 needs about $6,850 today. Same life, $22,000 more per year.

And the reason nothing feels cheaper even though inflation is “slowing”: slowing isn’t reversing. The 37% is a new floor.

Full segment video is in the bio. Thanks to @reginagonzaleztv @lauramoody_fox13 @sorbonified @lauramuellerconnects and the @fox13.news team.

Great message from the mainstage in Boca at Wealth Management EDGE this week: in this business, you don’t compete with the firm down the street. You compete with the future.

I love that, because it means you have to innovate, use the tech, and take on the hardest subjects and the hardest scenarios. You can’t just sell a product and call it “life changing.” Mostly because...it isn’t.

The future the largest firms are building toward is the one we already operate in: owning complexity, not just managing money.

Union Grove Capital was built for the executive, the owner, and the family standing at a liquidity event or a generational handoff; where the real work isn’t the investment management. It’s complex modeling; coordinating across tax, estate, and business planning, and the decisions that can’t be walked back, with one firm that brings the right specialists together.

That’s not where we’re going. It’s what we already do.

I take these trips and sit in these rooms for one reason: to make sure the people who trust us are always getting a firm operating at the edge of where this profession is headed.

Pretty exciting stuff!

Something I think applies to a lot of people in my network:

Imagine a person who steps into an organization that teaches them one thing really well. For someone in the insurance space, that could be an insurance strategy. For someone in corporate, that could be a leadership framework.

They work hard, learn the system, and get good at it. The income follows and so they do what any rational person does...they double down on what got them here. Same product, same strategy, same thinking, rinse and repeat (until life gets more complicated than the system they were handed).

At a certain income level, tax exposure starts to feel like a strategic question, not a product question. The wealth they are accumulating invites conversations few people inside that world are equipped to have. The full picture is rarely visible inside the walls they were trained in.

This person is not unintelligent....they are institutionalized....and institutionalized thinking has a ceiling that doesn’t reveal itself until you are already pressing against it. In my experience, it arrives as a tax bill, a life event, or a question from someone outside the institution that few people inside thought to ask.

Think about that for a moment. Who would you go talk to about next level strategies? HR? Your internal mentor? Their understanding may only reach as far as yours does.

High income buys comfort, but it doesn’t buy clarity.

That is where institutional thinking starts becoming a detractor instead of a strength. Just sayin.

I think the most expensive business mistakes do not come from bad markets or poor strategies.

They come from the wrong people in the room.

The misaligned partner. The desperate hire made before the freeze hits (Execs…tell me you don’t feel me here 😎).

People decisions get treated like transactions, but transactions are reversible. The wrong hire, the wrong partner?? Those cost years, not just money.

And the opposite is just as expensive. The right person, fully aligned, building alongside you, if you hold back on equity out of fear, they will eventually build without you.

(Equity is not a loss. It is a multiplier - with the right person at the right time.)

It’s smart to choose the people around your business the way you choose the business itself. With intention, standards, and with patience.

Good pieces. No system. That’s where wealth leaks.💧

At $5M you may not need a family office, but it’s a good time to start thinking like one.

This is not nerdy financial advisor stuff....this is client stuff.

When Altruist launched its AI tax agent earlier this year, $20 billion left Charles Schwab, LPL, and Raymond James in a single trading session.

The market understood something so many clients are not yet attuned to...the technology gap between independent advisors and big-box firms just closed (and in some areas, it reversed).

Executives, entrepreneurs, physicians, high performers expect their advisor to operate on current infrastructure. Added to that, they expect AI-integrated planning. They don’t need convincing that the tools have evolved beyond printed paper and manual documents.

What many don’t see is the access problem sitting underneath the typical assumptions about big brands.

A high-net-worth team at a large firm might spend weeks and tens of thousands of dollars on advanced tax planning.

For some independent advisors, that work now takes minutes. Same output, different cost structure, different incentive structure.

The issue isn’t whether the technology exists (it does). The issue is whether the advisor in the room with you has access to it, and whether their business model gives them a reason to use it on your behalf.

Big-box tools serve big-box economics. That’s not my opinion; it’s a business model.

Independent, fiduciary-registered advisors built on modern infrastructure aren’t a compromise. For many high performers, they’re a more direct fit.

Most clients don’t know that because no one told them.

There’s a number that people often talk about, in relation to their investment returns, called Average Rate of Return....is that number “wrong”? Nah, it’s just incomplete.

Imagine three distinct return figures that tell three different stories about what your money actually did and so many financial conversations stop at the first one.

1 Average rate of return is what gets reported.
2 The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is what the market actually delivered after volatility is factored in.
3 The real rate of return is what you kept after inflation (your actual spending power).

The gap between the first number and the third one is where retirement plans can get loose.

All examples shown are hypothetical and illustrative only. They do not represent any actual account, any UGC portfolio, or any specific investment product. The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index and is not available for direct investment. Results do not reflect fees, taxes, or transaction costs, which would reduce returns. Past index performance does not guarantee future results. This content is for educational and informational purposes only and does not constitute investment, tax, or legal advice. I’m looking for someone to relate to me here....

I took my son out to crush some clays yesterday (his first time shooting...he’s 14). Last minute, I decided to enlist a coach to show him the ropes of proper shooting instead of Dad teaching him this life skill (more on that in a minute).

Turns out the coach has taken the local youth shooting team to the national championship and won basically every year out of the past 10 years, except for one year.

He shows Reid the basics - safety, talked about the shooting team, how they operate, etc....we had no intention of talking about shooting teams when we went there. We really just wanted to shoot guns and blast clays out of the sky.

I’ll get to the point....Reid steps up with the shotgun, the coach guides - and this boy just starts blowing these clays to smitherines...seriously. I think he shot around 75 rounds and missed, like, 8 times....WTF? Incoming....Dad shoots at like, 50%. Who really needs the coach here?

Is anyone else getting their ass kicked by their 14 year old? LOL. First at Top Golf (he’s never golfed)....now at Sporting Clays? This is a combination of “proud Dad”, “grateful I hired a coach”, “I’m definitely going to hire the coach again (for me)”, and “step up my game” moment. I could blame it on the gun…but I don’t think I can blame it on the gun.

Amid the humbling moment I had, the coach put the full-court press on Reid, asking him to join his competitive shooting team. Super cool. Reid’s excited.

(Thankfully I can still lift more than him in the gym AND I can still kick his ass in a wrestling match...for now). taken in Tampa, Florida by @trav.mueller

The house stopped being a financial asset and it became an identity asset…physical proof the career meant something.

Downsizing feels like retreat and high performers don’t retreat.

The portfolio doesn’t care. The carrying cost runs regardless.
This is behavioral finance. It’s real (and it’s expensive).
