[en] I’ve had the immense pleasure of spending time at the Serra Grande institute in a rural area inside the state of Pernambuco in Brazil. They protect a very fragile nature and work with the warmest and most welcoming local community. The experience has been very rich and I couldn’t leave without returning these images to the people who touched me the most. I wrote a few words behind each image to say how much I admire who they are and what they do. I read these words to them since some don’t know how to read. I am most grateful for this life experience.

[pt] Tive o imenso prazer de passar um tempo no Instituto Serra Grande, em uma área rural do estado de Pernambuco, no Brasil. Eles protegem uma natureza muito frágil e trabalham com a comunidade local mais calorosa e acolhedora. A experiência tem sido muito rica e não poderia partir sem devolver estas imagens às pessoas que mais me tocaram. Escrevi algumas palavras atrás de cada imagem para dizer o quanto admiro quem elas são e o que elas fazem. Eu li essas palavras para elas porque algumas não sabem ler. Estou muito grato por esta experiência de vida.

Can we recognise what connects us without losing what makes each of us unique?

We are not separate islands. Every life is woven from relationships, and every encounter gives us an opportunity to practise compassion. To honour another person is to recognise the web of life that sustains us all. We can build solidarity through difference, rather than expecting everyone to share the same experience. Recognising our interdependence changes how we understand responsibility: the wellbeing of the world is not separate from our own.

Togetherness is not about becoming the same or sharing the same ideas and values, but about learning to coexist in our differences while remembering what connects us.

The whole human experience, social, physical, political and spiritual, is also shaped by our profound existence and by the lessons we learn from nature and our immediate environment. Along the way, we do our best to practise empathy, so that we may sow seeds rather than bear barren fruit.

It is here! Ready! After 5 days of hard but most pleasing work, the frame for my bike, made out of bamboo.
It is the incarnation of who I am, of my values, of the messages I want to share.
It is a turn of my life. Now I will have a companion that will allow me total freedom of movement and an opportunity to put my energy towards what I believe in. Soon the bike will be built and I will hit the road for a solidarity challenge. Stay in touch.
