How to see the northern lights in Tromso (without a guide).

Save this for your next northern lights trip! 💌

📍Location - Find an area away from the city’s light pollution. We hiked in the direction of mount Tromsdalstind (around 2.5 hours from the end of the bridge). The scenery here is beautiful - it felt so surreal walking through.

👩‍💻 Tracking apps - I used Norway-lights.com (free) which gives cloud coverage percentages and KPI which indicates aurora visibility. Generally, you want to look for dates/ times with high KPI and low cloud. However, in Tromso the KPI shouldn’t matter too much because it’s so north!

📸 Photography - You don’t need a fancy camera to take photos of the northern lights. Most newer phones automatically take great photos of the Aurora, so let them do the work for you! If not, you can start with these seltings on your phone -
F1.5 (high aperture for high
light sensitivity)
3s (night mode, long exposure for higher exposed, vibrant images)
ISO4000 - high ISO for maximum lens sensitivity)

🧣Have fun and wrap up warm!! During our hike I had 5 layers on my top half and 2 layers of fleece lining on my bottom half, along with some fluffy socks of course. I wore snow boots which kept my feet super warm, but you can get some show shoeing equipment too if you’re worried about grip in the snow!

I desperately needed to make some amazing memories for December 5. My partner told me "we are already traveling through Tromso, Norway. It is already a great memory after watching whale today." No, I needed some out of the world experience and somebody posted about floating in arctic water in rescue suit.

I signed us up for that. Floating under the star filled sky I thought this was one of the best experiences of my life. Then a fellow traveler suddenly asked "look at your right" and I saw aurora borealis slowly showing up. Within seconds it started dancing over our heads while we floated. And that night became THE BEST experience of my life. No matter what comes in life, I will always remember this day.

Some of the best activities in Tromsø.
What an incredible region in the Arctic !

Some tips :

- Book all of your excursions in advance (try to book 3 months before your trip if you can). It's very complicated to book the same day or week an excursion but not impossible.

- Be careful with the weather because in the winter season, you have 3 hours of sunlights for the best days and there are so much wind and snowfall.

- Book your accommodation out of the city center. It's cheaper and the region have a good bus line.

Can't get over my Post- Arctic blues. 🫶

"Porten til Ishavet" (Gateway to the Arctic Ocean). The artwork was created by local artist Marit Bockelie. The sculpture is illuminated at night and offers a unique view of the city and the Arctic Cathedral across the water.
