@travess explores the collapse between vector graphics, software layers, and physical printmaking. Smalley treats digital canvas manipulation and physical collage as a continuous medium, producing works that challenge where the screen ends and the physical object begins.

Just opened the "Ghost in the Thread group show at @artverseparis featuring the artists: Nam June Paik, LoVid, Travess Smalley, Chepertom, Rune Brink.

Open until October 18th at 5bis rue de Beauce 75003 Paris

“The glitch is a momentum: that moment that makes you pivot and reflect... an object slides from a normal operation into something different—a powerful confusion that forces the user to reevaluate their understanding of media.”

— Rosa Menkman, The Glitch Moment(um), 2011

Long before silicon microchips, computing was born on a weaver’s loom. Joseph Marie Jacquard’s 1804 automated loom used binary punch cards to guide warp and weft threads, establishing that the digital grid of pixel resolution and the tactile matrix of textiles share the exact same structural DNA. Riffing on the “ghost in the machine,” Ghost in the Thread explores how the ephemeral, glowing, and glitching code of digital signals is bound into physical and phygital materiality.

The exhibition traces an intergenerational arc beginning with Nam June Paik’s seminal 1994 work, DO NOT WATCH TV. By manipulating cathode-ray signals, Paik turned broadcast culture into a site of active disruption, laying the foundation for glitch aesthetics. LoVid extends this legacy, translating analog video synthesis and raw electrical currents into a vibrant multi-channel installation that renders the hidden digital ghost tangible.

A new generation of artists continues this fluid movement between code and physical space. Chepertom converts pixel drawings and algorithmic glitches into custom Jacquard tapestries, demonstrating that a digital pixel and a woven knot are functionally identical. Travess Smalley collapses vector graphics and physical printmaking, treating software manipulation and collage as a single continuous medium. Rune Brink examines digital nostalgia and low-resolution screen architecture, bringing pixelated anomalies into dialogue with physical space. by @travess

Excited to share that the Pixel Rugs monograph, published by @vetroeditions , is launching this Saturday at @movingimagenyc . I’ll be giving a talk and signing copies of the book. Printed using Quadrifluox, an experimental fluorescent-ink process, the pages translate RGB color into pigment. The afternoon also includes a performance by Edgar Fabián Frías with four local Indigenous artists and a performance lecture by OONA. Supported by @artontezos Free, but RSVP required — link in bio. taken in Museum of the Moving Image by @travess
