2500/2500

This year I committed to rolling 2500 5-minute rounds and at 11:30am this morning I got the dog shit kicked outta me by my favorite bully @charlie_gilpin for my 2500th round. A few things to say…

1. It was tough.

2. My Jiu Jitsu got much better.

3. I highly recommend picking something stupid that’s hard and doing it.

4. Considering how little I’ve talked to any of you the amount of love I have for the PNW Jiu Jitsu community is immense.

5. I’ll never do that shit again.

I used to hate G.

Let’s face it: when a bunch of grown men decide to make a hobby out of simulating physical dominance, there are bound to be some hurt feelings.

For a while, @gonzalo_espinoza_gamboa_ and I were mat enemies culminating in a baby squabble at a 6 p.m. back in 2023.

Maybe it was the stress of being at floundering gym. Maybe it was things going on in our personal lives. Or maybe it was the fact that we were similarly ranked under @elimayne24 , who loved nothing more than putting two athletes against each other. (It was probably that.)

Whatever the reason, I think we’d both agree now that barking at each other after a roll isn’t how men handle conflict.

So what changed?

One word: time.

Neither of us was quitting, and neither of us was leaving the other’s orbit. Eventually, we realized we were going to have to grow as individuals if we wanted to coexist.

I’m happy to say that’s exactly what happened.

Today, G is one of my favorite training partners. And maybe our rocky start has something to do with it, but I can honestly say he’s one of the most naturally talented jiu-jitsu athletes I’ve ever trained with (I seriously mean that), He doesn’t need much instruction to know exactly what to do.

He is the soul reason I started going to 10th Planet and learning leg locks -he’ll rip your shit off and hand it to you. 🦶

His growth hasn’t just happened on the mats, either. He’s completely transformed his body over the past few years, and he deserves a ton of credit for the work he’s put in (see second to last slide)

I used to hate G. Now I love the guy.

Thursday night in Portland. 🦫

Last night, I stopped by three gyms during the 6 o’clock hour.

The first 15 minutes were at @10thplanetportland , where I found Phill leading the PDX army. I ripped a vape pen and got flipped off by @jleal10p .

Next stop was @eastsidegrappling, where Josh was dropping technical details y’all don’t know about and making deep-cut americana references y’all definitely don’t know about. (Shout out to the Rockettes.)

Finally, I pulled up to @oregongrapplingarts , where I was greeted with two big hugs at the door and got to witness intergender battles that the girls are winning.

Three gyms. Three cultures. One community.

Like most grapplers, I have a friend group of normies who know nothing about my life on the mats.

These are people I’ve grown up with—people who have been with me through school and major life events like my wedding, graduations, and my children being born.

A few weeks back, I was at a barbecue with a bunch of people who have known me since grade school, and they were inquiring about my friends in jiu-jitsu. At one point during the conversation, one friend asserted that, “Obviously, these jiu-jitsu people aren’t as close with you as we all are.”

To which I responded:

“At my funeral, I hope all of you can make it, but there’s gonna be a pew or two full of people that none of you have ever met—people with cauliflower ears and generally disagreeable demeanors…. Just know that’s the most important group in the room, and those people know me better than you all ever could.”

They were very offended.

Mat friends over real friends forever.
