A DNF at ‘Falling Leaves Lahti’ marks the end of my season.

Proud to have fought back to the lead group from a very early puncture for almost an hour, but sad to pull the plug after 90km with a hamstring injury. I’d hoped to nurse the injury through to score some decent Earth Series points ahead of the final next month & somewhat salvage my season. Alas, some things are not meant to be 🤷‍♂️

There’s no denying it’s been an awful year from a results perspective, but I’m as grateful as ever for the opportunities I’ve had, places I’ve been & people I’ve met.

No UCI World Champs for me this year & with a DNF here, there’s no point in heading to the Earth Series Final either. Whilst this might sound pessimistic, it’s far better to reset & begin prep for next season. I’m pretty done mentally & have been managing two injuries for a while now, so it’s time to take a rest.

To friends, family, sponsors & strangers alike, thanks for all the support this year. Onwards to better things & a happier, healthier Travis next season 🤞 taken in Pajulahti by @travis_bramley

UCI World Championships 2023 🌈

Brutal, technical & unforgiving. The racing was frenetic, aggressive & at points terrifying.

I fought hard early on to maintain position as 240ish of the world’s best gravel riders tore through every corner, narrow lanes & spectacular vineyards.

Shortly before the first photo I’m chasing down a French & Czech rider up the first major climb. I felt good. Nailed bottle grabs in the feed zones, good positioning in the bunch & on top of my nutrition.

Fast-forward another hour & we hit a long stretch of twisty singletrack around a lake. Whilst struggling in this section, I made up dozens of positions on the climbs that followed.

On the way back into town things took a turn. My front brake was rubbing, handlebars spun slightly & was pushing 400w downhill to hold sight of the group in front. Seeing stars, I missed every bottle offered by the team & my family in feed zone 5. By feed zone 6 I’m stopped, sat on the road, completely out of it whilst Mum is almost force feeding me bananas and paracetamol. @jonah_drake25 took the lead on fixing my mechanical woes, and I continued. 200w was all I had in the tank for the next 1hr+ as my body was recovering from the suspected dehydration, as rider after rider came flying past.

40km to go. The hardest climbs yet to come and my hamstring locks up. More riders pass me uttering curse words as I partly block the racing line. After another 5 mins I walk with my bike, egged on by fans screaming ‘di di di’. First climb. Protect the hamstring. Done. Second climb. Just get to the top. I crawl down the singletrack MTB section on the descent, and get safely into the finish. My coordination was not good after my little sit down in feed zone 6 & those last few km were genuinely pretty scary to ride (anyone who says otherwise is a skilled MTB rider or lying).

Hugs from the team, Mum, Dad & Kathryn.

On my day I strongly believe I can be up there. Sunday was not my day, but I’m proud of the perseverance I showed & also so thankful of the people around me for enabling me to continue on my own terms & finish. 2023 done. 2024 in the planning. But first, a well earned break. 🫡 taken in Treviso, Italy by @travis_bramley

67th in the 🌍

A wonderful part of the world & finally a world champs ride that I’m content with.

An infernal pace from the gun in the elites (and not being the lightest rider 😅) meant that this was essentially a 5hr time trial, but was nonetheless a great experience & the Aussie crowds were fantastic.

🥉 | Nordic Chase CPN-OSL

A podium at my debut ultra, ~800km through one of my favourite parts of the world. Can’t ask for more than that.

It’s taken me far too long to post this, partly because I wanted to write words that do the experience justice (these don’t 😂) & partly because I haven’t had the time or the emotional capacity.

It was an idyllic route & has further fuelled my daydreams about one day living beside a lake nestled in a Swedish forest. The Nordic nations have a kind of warmth to them that’s hard to put into words. The Swedish forests, in particular, filled me with hope & a brilliant sense of calm.

Riding through the night was empowering & I can see why people get hooked on these experiences. On more than one occasion, I switched off my front light to be guided only by moonlight. Watching the world wake up around you is also a privilege, especially when that world is the Nordics.

A huge thank you & chapeau to Greg & the organising team 🙏

Around 24hrs after finishing in Oslo, our Grandad passed away. My family didn’t tell me until I got home, but were quick to say he knew I’d finished when they did. Knowing that gave me a both a degree of comfort & a sense of gratitude. I found myself thinking about him many times throughout & this ride will forever trigger memories of all the good times. Also a reminder to never take for granted the opportunities I have.

Since then, Izzy & I have moved house (again 😂), I’ve continued grafting towards UCI World Champs alongside full time work & like to think I’ve squeezed the most out of every day. I’m well aware it’s not personally sustainable to be this busy, but I’m almost at the end of a very long year & that feels great 🧘‍♂️

Arguably the race I’ve been most looking forward to this season! A complete step into the unknown & a daunting prospect now it’s just a few hours away 🫣

🏆 @sportivaevents Exeter Gravel Races

Chuffed to make it 2️⃣ years in a row at the Exeter Gravel Races for me & the @sonderbikes Sedona 💯

Sportiva do a great job of putting together as much of a gravel course as you’ll find in this part of the world & it’s a great event for beginners and experienced riders alike.

For me, it’s a great barometer for how everything is going after winter & the first few months of returning to full time work after uni.

Pleasure to share the podium with @mikeymottram & @angusyoung139. Pushed all the way by Angus, kept me consistently looking over my shoulder after I took the lead 45 minutes in 😮‍💨

🌊 Cyclocross doesn’t get much more Cornish than this!

A mixture of bad luck & poor preparation at the penultimate round of @swcx_league, where pedal issues meant I couldn’t keep my right foot clipped in over any kind of bump - especially while cornering. Sulked back to the car after <15 minutes of racing & grateful I didn’t take the train on this occasion!

📸 Photos too good not to share from @ezeekwheel. Check out the whole album from his bio.

Final race of the @swcx_league next weekend in North Devon 🙂‍↔️

MSc - Global Sustainability Solutions ☑️

Two great years at Exeter, topped off with a distinction and faculty commendation; while being lucky enough to graduate surrounded by some of the people closest to me.

Studying sustainability can be tough on your mind. It’s overwhelming at times, learning about everything we should (and can) be doing to protect our planet, but often aren’t doing fast enough or indeed, at all. Yet, it’s also deeply rewarding and empowering. I’m excited to work in a career where I can hopefully make a difference, however small that may be in the grand scheme of things.

Yet the two things that will live longest in the memory from my time at Exeter aren’t necessarily academic. Firstly, is my time at Exeter City FC & having the chance to put what I was learning into practice, in what would genuinely be a dream job if it were full-time.

Secondly, was the cycling club. I’m not sure I’d still be racing competitively today without that club and that group of people. UoECC has helped show me the joy of cycling beyond competing myself, and the strength of a genuinely supportive, fun and inclusive community. Organising events this past year has created some of my fondest cycling memories and reminded me there’s so much more to the sport than just riding fast. Bringing BUCS road events to Devon for the first time, kickstarting the brilliantly named Cream First Crit Series, and giving hundreds of riders opportunities to race in a historically underserved region has been incredibly rewarding.

I’m proud to have juggled academia, work and training to compete alongside some of the world’s best gravel cyclists these past two years. However, I’m more than ready to start my first full-time job in sustainability on Monday, and finally put university to bed… 🚂

Thanks for listening to my TED Talk x

Lboro fans scroll to the end for a surprise 👀
