🌱 Restoring land through regenerative farming

What is El Niño and what does it mean for our global food systems? 🌍

Consider this post El Niño 101, where we break down what it is, what it means for East African farmers, and what we’re doing to help farmers and communities prepare.

What questions do you have about El Niño? We’ll answer in the comments! 👇 by @treesforthefuture

Wall Street has nothing on these bankers. 🌱

Much like financial institutions safeguard assets for the future, community-based seed banks protect something essential: access to diverse, high-quality seeds that help farmers grow food, restore land, and build resilient livelihoods.

But these banks do more than store seeds.

By training farmers to collect, prepare, and supply seeds, together we’re turning local knowledge into new income opportunities alongside their regenerative farming businesses.

At one seed bank in East Africa, participating farmers collectively earned 2.8 million Kenyan shillings (approximately $21,700 USD) through seed sales over a year.

And the returns extend far beyond income.

By preserving seed diversity and improving access to quality, locally suited seeds, community-based seed banks help strengthen local food systems, support biodiversity, restore degraded landscapes, and build resilience to a changing climate.

It’s an investment that pays off for farmers, their communities, and the landscapes they steward—not just for the next planting season, but for generations to come. 🌳 by @treesforthefuture

When one farmer learns something new, the impact can reach far beyond their own land. 🌱

Through our Plant it Forward projects, farmers share their knowledge and experience with others, helping more people put regenerative agriculture into practice.

Sililo’s journey shows what that can look like. With new skills and ongoing support, she’s transformed her farm, grown her income, and created more opportunities for her family. Now, as neighbors look to her for advice, she’s helping that progress take root in other farms, too.

Real change grows, one farmer at a time. 🌍 by @treesforthefuture

You may have noticed us talking more about carbon recently…

Our belief is that the carbon market holds huge potential to deliver greater benefits to farmers—the people who are already delivering the kind of high-quality and high-integrity work that the market, investors, and businesses are looking for.

But what does this actually look like for a real farmer?

For Tobias, it’s another opportunity to build intergenerational value from land he’s already transformed. 🌱 by @treesforthefuture

Somewhere along the way, industrial farming deprioritized working with nature. 🌱

But for generations, smallholder farmers have developed ways to work with their land, shaped by local conditions, experience, and close observation of the natural world.

At TREES, we bring that knowledge together with science-backed training and practical support, working alongside farmers to put regenerative agriculture (back) into practice. by @treesforthefuture

As restoration grows, so do we. And farmers grow it all. 🌱 by @treesforthefuture

This World Food Day, we’re celebrating the people at the heart of our food systems: farmers. 🌱

Across Africa, approximately 309 million people face hunger and undernourishment. Meanwhile, millions of smallholder farmers are working to feed their families and communities while navigating degraded land and increasingly unpredictable growing conditions.

And supporting regenerative farmers in creating more resilient farms is key to strengthening food security worldwide.

So, an average 83% increase in food security for farming families after their first year in our programs is something worth celebrating this World Food Day.

Thank you for making it possible. Let’s keep growing, together. 🫶 by @treesforthefuture

What happens when farmers embrace regenerative farming? 🌱

As a farmer begins to work alongside nature, a powerful ripple effect takes place.

Soil health improves. Biodiversity and native species return to the land. Families are lifted from poverty and food insecurity. Harvests are more frequent, with greater quantity and quality. Businesses and communities grow. Carbon is removed from the atmosphere. Climate resilience increases.

And when you support TREES, you help make it all possible. by @treesforthefuture

“Will there be enough to feed my family?”

For years, this question followed 72-year-old farmer Tito into every season on his struggling land in Mwamondi Village, Tanzania.

His household of eight was dependent on a single crop, and when harvests fell short, so did food, income, and any sense of security.

Everything changed two years ago when Tito decided to partner with TREES to transform his one-acre farm into a regenerative agroforestry system.

With TREES’ support, Tito learned new skills to improve the longevity of his land. Now, Tito plans his farm in seasons, grows dozens of crops, collects seeds from his harvests, and even makes his own compost—a skill that has made a huge difference on his farm and the food he grows.

His land is rich in papaya, bananas, and guava, growing alongside eggplant, onions, cabbage, okra, carrots, and more. Among them, nitrogen-fixing trees enrich the soil and fast-growing trees offer shade, shelter, and protection across the farm.

His family eats better, his income covers their needs, and his neighbors often stop by to learn from him.

“My greatest fear was how I could provide enough food for my household at my age,” he says. “That fear no longer gives me sleepless nights.”

What happens when land returns to how nature intended? 🌱

It can feed a family.
It can grow nutritious food.
It can support a business.
It can provide habitat for wildlife.
It can improve resiliency toward extreme weather.
And it can remove carbon.

That’s the potential of restoring farmland through regenerative agriculture: the same land can support more life, more opportunities, and a more secure future for the people and communities who depend on it.

With the right approach, these impacts can be realized and scaled—from individual farms to entire landscapes. 🌍 by @treesforthefuture

Trees don’t work to a deadline. 🌳

They take time to establish, grow, and become part of the landscapes around them. And for the stewards who care for them, nurturing seedlings requires commitment long after the initial work is done.

This long-term thinking is at the heart of Mazingira Day—and it’s something we see every day in our work alongside farmers in Kenya. 🇰🇪

Happy Mazingira Day, from all of us at TREES. 🫶 by @treesforthefuture
