So………..
Let’s acknowledge the elephant in the room, shall we?
The depiction of a child prostitute as the ultimate embodiment of evil (🤔?!😬) was never going to…. Um (😳?!😬)……… “translate smoothly” (🤔🤔😬😳😳😬😬🥴🥴🥴🥴????!!!!!)…….. in 2026.
And Steinbeck‘s grand American masterpiece,
though beauteous, is not without its issues.
Thankfully though, Pugh’s magnificent grasp of the assignment, should quickly reassure any fans of the novel who may have grimaced at the prospect of a modern adaptation.
Here, in place of Steinbeck’s demonic, near elemental force of nature, her Cathy is less antichrist, more (barely) living doll, whose only animating principle seems to be raw survival at any cost.
And it’s a welcome angle,
because believe me, at almost 75 years since it was first written,
Steinbeck‘s dark and often twisted American parable, still manages to shock……..

As someone who has spent much of his working life in and around P-Town, I must admit, I was quite looking forward to a spot of lazy, hazy, late summer nostalgia as much as the next Pilsner enthusiast. And on that front, “Tony“ certainly delivers.
In fact, so evocative was the imagery, that no sooner had I started to smell the salt, that I began to wonder, what it might have been like, for a young heterosexual Anthony Bourdain, to find himself thrust into the center of one of the queerest and most geographically inaccessible communities in the United States, during the height of the sexual revolution.
And I couldn’t help but wonder (😝) what it might have been like, to experience such an environment, in all of its complexity, and sometimes bleak beauty, in place of this jarringly reconfigured backdrop for yet another heteronormative pastoral fantasy, playing out on the screen before me.
And I wondered, who amongst this motley crew of scrappy onscreen superchuds, would no doubt have had lives and experiences which ran so, so much deeper.
I wondered how this might have raised the stakes, fueled the grief…….. sharpened the terror.
I wondered what relationships, connection, addiction, might mean to those in such a place, during such a time.
I wondered how it must have felt, to genuinely touch a community, which in just a few short years would be almost wiped out by an oncoming AIDS epidemic…….
And I gotta admit, dear reader, that after watching “Tony“………. I’m left still wondering.
But who knows? Maybe they’ll make a movie about it someday. 🤷🏻‍♂️😉

Oh my!
Nolan‘s “Odyssey“ has come to town……
but how indeed, to review? 😏
The text of texts. The project of projects. Poems within a poem, allegories within allegories, each segmented into near parable structure. A mammoth of a task no doubt, each mythic beat being met by Nolan with stunning competence and precision…. But know, dear reader, what you are buying. And realign expectations.
Those expecting “Gladiator” Will walk out disappointed,
but ah, here’s the rub…… those seeking resonance, might just find Elliot Page’s sequences…… to be the highlight of the entire film…..
Highly recommended, should you choose to invest…. 😏😉✨
