Königstein Fortress is one of Europe's largest hilltop fortifications, located on a 9.5-hectare sandstone Plateau rising 240 meters above the Elbe River in Saxon Switzerland, Germany.

The fortress is shielded by 42 meter high walls and sandstone cliff faces from which you have great views of Köningstein, the river Elbe and the surrounding table mountains for which the area is known.

Last October, I enjoyed spending a couple of hours on top of the walls of the fortress photographing the surrounding beech trees that were showing off their prime fall colours in a light drizzle and fog that rolled in and out from the river Elbe.

Rauðascal crater

Last year I visited this stunning crater with @jos_pannekoek and @robert.bonsels at the end of a long photography day. The drive there took longer than expected and for a long time it was uncertain if we were going to arrive there before sunset at all.

When we finally arrived there were around ten minutes of direct light left to send the drone in the air and find a composition. That was definitely not the preparation I wished for. Imagine, standing at the foot of this huge crater with no clue of what the landscape will look like from the air.

Still, with the immense Hekla volcano in the background on the right, I like this shot. This place is definitely on my list for my next visit to Iceland.

Ptarmigan Lake, Skoki Valley

If you want to photograph larches for sunrise in the Canadian Rockies, be prepared to start your hike early, because there will always be an altitude gain of 500-700 m involved.

Although Skoki Valley is located close to very popular Lake Louise, this valley sees few visitors. It probably has to do with the unappealing 6 km access road that stays entirely within a pine forest. Only trucks headed for Skoki Lodge are allowed to use this road, you can not even ride your bike there. After that it's another 5 km before you get the first views of Lake Ptarmigan standing on Boulders Pass.

I was lucky enough to have some colour in the sky after a two hour hike in the dark.

Waiting for Autumn

The most beautiful time of the year is just around the corner. Foggy mornings are back again, but the forests are still very green. So when I saw nice colours in the sky, I changed the plan and enjoyed this beautiful sunrise at the Terletseheide.

Ljótipollur crater lakes, Fjallabak nature reserve

Hverabotn, Kerlingarfjöll mountain range

A hike of just one hour takes you from the main geothermal area of Kjerlingarfjöll to this small hidden area, named Hverabotn. If you leave early, you will have this colourful playground all to yourself. Steam vents and a bubbling hot pool make you realise the earth is very much alive in Iceland

Ptarmigan Lake, Skoki Valley

Bannf National Park is the epicenter of tourism for the Canadian Rocky Mountains and the small settlement of Lake Louise is right at the heart of it. From here the very popular Lake Moraine and Lake Louise are easily accessible with great mountain hikes, albeit that you're never alone there.

On the north side of Lake Louise, there is another splendid valley that is much more secluded, Skoki Valley, which has excellent hikes and numerous beautiful lakes. There is a reason this valley sees very few visitors, because to get there you need to hike 11 km in the woods before the views finally open once you reach Boulder's Pass. When the weather forecast was good, I decided to start hiking well before sunrise, gaining altitude quickly on the Lake Louise Ski Lodge access road for the first 4 km, hoping any bears in the neighbourhood were still deep asleep.

Around 7:30 am I reached Ptarmigan Lake after hiking 11,5 km. At that point I saw nice colours in the sky, but finding a composition in a place you have never been before, is not easy. I took this shot a little later, showcasing the main reason I wanted to visit this valley: grand mountain scenery, a deep blue lake and larches with prime fall colours. By the end of the day, I had hiked 32 km and met only a dozen of other hikers, some of which at Skoki Lodge where I paused for a great lunch. Truly one of the highlights of a wonderful Autumn vacation.

Gljúfurárfoss, the gorge river waterfall

This 40 m high waterfall is easily accessible right off ring road 1 on the south coast. It lies half-hidden in a narrow gorge, very near to Seljalandsfoss. You can wade through the water to view the waterfall and take a selfie while standing on a big rock. Although I prefer waterfalls that are more remote, I couldn't resist to join the line and get up there myself.

Wedge Pond, Kananaskis

Autumn arrives early in the Rocky Mountains. By mid September larches - which only grow above 1500 m - start turning yellow first, then orange and finally brown before they lose their needles at the beginning of October. In lower valleys colourful displays of Aspen trees can be seen during the same period, before winter takes over. I would love to go back one day and hit the trails again into this splendid mountain scenery.
