As a writer, I seldom find myself at a loss for words. And here I struggle to even pen this little tribute to my favourite musician, who has passed on a week earlier, @theduncansheik

Anyone who actively decides to take up an instrument does so because they are inspired by the greatness of another, with the goal to emulate their style and play as they do. For the past 13 years, I have attempted, and more often than not failed, at pulling off the ‘GENIUS’ playing style that was Duncan Sheik. Along the way, I learned you ‘don’t really need to know every last detail’. You play and play until one day it just clicks.

And how Duncan Sheik became my favourite is purely just by chance, but I remember that day when it first heard his music. I was alone at home on a summer afternoon, flipping through TV channels in my living room, when I accidentally stumbled across his most popular song, ‘Barely Breathing,’ on VH1. There are many who, much like myself, claim to be a music buff until they run into something they have never heard before. It’s that moment that grabs you. I had never heard his music before...I thought to myself “Who is this guy?” Ah, before I could even grasp what I was experiencing, the smooth visuals of that ‘90s-style video editing, cut with his swooning good looks and guitar playing, had me sold. For a young man desperately searching for a musical style to hang his hat on, it was on this fateful day that the music found him instead. I cannot explain the way it connected with and touched my soul. Like the singer is talking to you directly. This song made such an impact that it would become the soundtrack of the very first film I produced in high school that year.

Regrettably, it would take me a couple of years and some serious maturing to understand that Duncan Sheik was more than just the one-hit wonder the industry portrayed him to be. He was an incredibly versatile artist who was consistently creating an eclectic body of work. Far away from the pop charts, to Broadway and within his own little world was an inspirational artist. by @trevoulin

Pig (2021) directed by Michael Sarnoski with Nicholas Cage in the lead role who gives a career reviving performance as a Truffle farmer in search of his lost pig. A well written and simple linear story with complex subtext and a deep back story that unravels slowly before your eyes. Totally recommended. by @trevoulin
