🌱 Photography 2 — Thematic Series

As my second year of photography concludes, I joined my other fellow classmates as I completed my second thematic series. This year, I decided to go a different “path” - focusing instead on visualizing the big decisions that people make in their everyday lives. As I step up into my senior year, and some of my most pivotal life choices begin to mount before me, I felt immensely inclined to reflect on what it truly feels like to make a decision.

“Pathways” is designed to show firsthand what it’s like to truly make those life-changing decisions, and how they can be unnerving at first, but can also ultimately be the right choice for you. By taking a new path in life, you can experience new things and make more choices, that can completely change your life and the way you live.

One of the things I love most about this series is its meaning. I took something that is so simple and used it to describe something more that everyone can relate to. In addition, with this series, I further refined my editing skills, which completely transformed the focus and detail of my photos. And out of all of the things I have done in my Photography 2 class this year, this is one of the projects that I am most proud of. by @treycanvas

📸 — Thematic Series

In my Photography 1 class, I was tasked with taking a series of photos around a certain theme, also known as a thematic series. For my series, I wanted to explore how the city of Columbia has changed over time.

I recognized that the city I live in is a very historical one, and more specifically, how newer buildings and older buildings sit right next to each other. This contrast was what really stood out to me, and I took photos of them, highlighting the cities history and growth over the past few decades.

What inspired me is city architecture. I have always had a passion for architecture — especially those that are present in urban areas — as it really tells a story and shows the personality of the city itself. The design of each tall building in every city is different, and represents said city in it’s own way. For Columbia, it has more of a historical approach that also clashes with modern expansion, and that’s something that I wanted to highlight in my photography. It signifies how Columbia has evolved, and the direction of where it could be going within the decades to come.

What is unique about my photos is how I took them. I took the time to zoom in on each building, highlighting the important spots and focusing on the exterior enclosures. I think that these exterior walls show how long the building has stood there, and how it’s aged with time. In general, this project made me appreciate the history of Columbia in a whole new light - and how these buildings all tell different stories, and how it represents the hundreds of thousands of people who’ve walked through the streets they sit on, and the people who have worked in the buildings that stand there.
