i revisit Maria Puig de la Bellacasas writings often with soil study…through an ecological lens she critiques commodification….turning and extracting natural entities, like soil, into resources and goods for exchange, (often to advance some capitalist human desire) erodes and strips them of their relational, ethical and intrinsic existence.
this is one gesture i offer and practice to imagine and enact a new multitude of paths that resist the disconnection commodification upholds. together, beyond boundaries can we embrace questioning linear constraints to expand through and into the beyond?

upcoming performance - November 8th @grage.to

Aligning her body within and against the physical corners in space with the corners that exist geometrically and emotionally in her own body. In this performance corners can be a place to share weight, a brace that holds and suspends, a corner not as an impasse but where secrets, desires and the unknown reside. A playful yet heartbroken possibility of what’s to come around the next corner.

some findings regarding marigolds (aka cempasúchil, tages, calendula) and the ploughed soil of my heart

The Aztec romance of Xóchitl and Huitzilin.

The young lovers would spend all their free time together, playing, exploring and dreaming. One of their most favourite things to do together was to climb to the top of the mountain where they would present offerings to Tonatiugh, the Sun God. In return he would smile with the sky and shine his warm rays down on them. In these moments they swore to each other that their love would last forever.

Soon after war broke out and Huitzilin headed to battle. Xóchitl felt as if her world was falling apart, she dreaded the day that did inevitably arrive with news of Huitzilin’s death. Overwhelmed with grief, she climbed that same mountain, this time alone, to beg Tonatiugh that he reunite them in eternity. Empathizing with her visceral sorrow Tonatiugh shone a ray of light on her cheek that transformed her to a cempasúchil flower. The flower remained closed until a hummingbird, with the spirit of Huitzilin lovingly touched its centre, it then opened revealing that captivating orange hue. To this day, destined to be bound together, Xóchitl and Huitzilin, the bloom and the bird.

Shakespeare

By its colour, by its light,The marigold, that goes to bed wi’ the sun
And with him rises weeping: these are flowers
Of middle summer, and I think they are given
To men of middle age.

Scientific genus for marigolds.

From Roman mythology, Tagetes was the founding prophet of the Etruscan religion, who according to legend, taught the Etruscans divination. It could be speculated that for this reason, Tagetes took its namesake because it grows in almost any soil, with unusual tolerance to drought.

Caltha’s tale.

Caltha falls so in love with the Sun God Apollo that she spends her days standing in a field, desirous and paralyzed. She was so engrossed with adoration that she could not tear herself away from seeing him. Eventually, she just wasted away. Burnt by this inextinguishable passion her spirit was transformed into the first marigold.

In Latin.

Translated, calendula means little clock. This connects the plant and the God by @trickyruth

some of the aftermath of the performance work soil study tkaronto. filmed by @susannahaight

“Performance’s only life is in the present. Performance cannot be saved, recorded, documented, or otherwise participate in the circulation of representations of representations: once it does so, it becomes something other than performance. To the degree that performance attempts to enter the economy of reproduction it betrays and lessens the promise of its own ontology. Performance’s being, like the ontology of subjectivity proposed here, becomes itself through disappearance.” Unmarked. The Politics of Performance. 1993. Peggy Phelan

i wanted very little video and photographic documentation of this work. it was a push to hold my ground on this with the curator and producer, i am glad i did and i am so grateful you showed up in person to experience the performance. by @trickyruth

the story goes…in 15th century germany a knight and his lover were taking a romantic stroll along the danube. whilst picking some flowers along the shoreline the knight fell in and was swept away by the river. with the current pulling him deeper, knowing he would never return again, he desperately flung the flowers ashore to his lover and exclaimed “forget me not!”

there is also another version. where the lovers live on opposite sides of the river - he attempts to swim across. when he finally makes it to the other side he grabs at some flowers growing on the bank. in that moment the current carries him away. clutching the flowers as he drowns in the distance he shouts “forget me not!” by @trickyruth
