In my current suffering, I think of the face of Christ. What it could have looked like... The once unremarkable face of Jesus became etched into the minds of every person who beheld Him that day, because now it was strikingly bruised and bleeding.

Those eyes that held pain unimaginable... staring deep into the soul of anyone who dared to look into them.

That pierced hand is now reaching out to me, saying, "Join me here."

Ordinarily, anyone would say, "No way! Look at You! Why would I go where You are?"

I say it every day in different ways:

No, I don't want to consider others as greater than myself.

No, I don't want to submit and honor my husband.

No, I don't want to be content.

That face with gashes and lacerations is like that for me...

How does one bat away the hand of the One who took a beating for them?

How do you spit in the face of the One who took your nails in His hands?

Well, easily—once you don't think about it too much, or let the thought provoke you to indebtedness.

Wouldn't anyone try to find ways to take off of their plate of suffering? To try, however futile, to alleviate some discomfort?

I am learning more intimately that suffering is the door through which we enter closeness with Christ. How can you deeply know someone unless you have suffered with them?

We all want to go to heaven to meet a Christ that we didn't take time to intimately know through the gift of suffering. taken in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago by @trini.proverbs31ish

Left this week of VBS grateful that we can even do this.

There are countries where churches aren't free to teach kids scripture openly. Where people can't proclaim the gospel. Where hearts can't be given the opportunity to turn to Christ.

Just want to count my blessings. 💖 taken in Trinidad and Tobago by @trini.proverbs31ish

Working out is not about being sexy or looking strong.

I started out exercising in March because I wanted to look better, thinking that would make me feel better about myself. But over time, the Lord ministered to me about my vanity. He showed me how sinful and misguided I was. My mind has been changed regarding what my body is actually for.

The world we live in has totally misdefined the purpose of the body and its use. When you are constantly bombarded by women—both young and older—videotaping their butts online at the gym or running in a sports bra and shorts for us to bask in their flawless midsections, it is hard to maintain a biblical outlook on physical health and wellness.

But I’ve learned to exercise because I believe that being strong helps me fulfill my purpose. And my purpose is to know Christ and to make Him known.

Because I have begun moving my body, my mind functions better, my focus is sharper, and my energy is so much higher than it was before. Movement and discipline have not become an idol to me; instead, they have become an act of worship and gratitude that God gave me a body to live in.

This body serves my family. This body serves my church. This body serves the women whom God allows me to minister to.

I am so thankful that God didn't leave my philosophy in the garbage, but instead gave me something sustainable and life-giving to hold on to. The Gospel is about one Man giving up His body for the world. I believe I have a much better chance at living out that truth if I take care of my own body, giving it over and over again for the sake of those who need it. by @trini.proverbs31ish

I Finally Did It! My Sourdough Starter Didn't Die

After what feels like the serial murder of several innocent sourdough starters... I have finally done it.

I have a bubbly, active starter, a beautiful loaf of bread, and an ego that is now slightly too large to fit through normal-sized doorways.

I'm feeling kind of unstoppable. I'm feeling kind of... unputupable. 🤣

If I can keep a sourdough starter alive in the Trinidad heat, perhaps I should run for Prime Minister. Clearly I'm capable of miracles.

My Current Go-To Recipe

Ingredients

100 g active, bubbly sourdough starter

375 g warm water

500 g bread flour

9–12 g fine sea salt

A Few Things I Learned Along the Way

Feed your starter more often than you think.

Our climate is hot, and my starter races through its food. I've found that feeding it about three times throughout the day keeps it active and happy before baking. Don't just watch the clock—watch your starter. When it's bubbly, doubled in size, and smells pleasantly tangy, it's ready to use.

Give the dough some time before refrigerating.

After mixing and completing your stretch and folds, let the dough rest on the kitchen counter for about an hour. This gives fermentation a head start before placing it in the fridge for around four hours to continue developing flavour and structure.

Wet your hands. Every. Single. Time.

Sourdough is wonderfully sticky. Before every stretch and fold, wet your hands with a little water. The dough will release much more easily, making the process far less frustrating and helping you handle it gently without adding extra flour.

Final Thoughts

This loaf represents far more than bread.

It's patience. It's persistence. It's learning from every failed attempt instead of giving up.

So if you've murdered a few starters along the way, don't be discouraged. Your successful loaf might be just one feeding away.

Now excuse me while I walk around the house admiring my bread like it won an Olympic medal. by @trini.proverbs31ish

This is the first birthday celebration I’ve planned and executed for my husband out of a pure heart. Because I actually had time beforehand to think and prepare, I started to notice what I was really feeling and thinking during the process.

At first, a few familiar thoughts crept in: “Is he going to do something nice for me for my birthday?” “I hope he knows I put a lot of effort into this.” “I make everyone’s birthday special in the family, but mine always feels unceremonious by comparison.”

Suddenly, I felt arrested in my heart with shame. A convicting question hit me: “Are you doing this to honor him, or are you doing it to honor yourself?”

The world has a philosophy that says, “You do this for me, and I will do that for you.” But Jesus says, “I do this for you, and I don’t expect you to return the favor.”

Honestly, this ended up being the most fulfilled I’ve ever felt planning a birthday, because I realized I was giving my husband his flowers while he is still here to receive them. I’ve been to a lot of funerals lately, and my heart has broken for the wives these wonderful men left behind. I can’t even imagine being in their shoes.

Instead of wasting time waiting for the favor to be repaid, praised, or acknowledged, I became content with the simple fact that I get to cherish him right now. We truly don't know when any of us will be called home. taken in Maracas Beach by @trini.proverbs31ish

"I realized that the deepest spiritual lessons are learned not when God lets us have our way in the end, but when He makes us wait—bearing with us in love and patience until we are able to honestly pray what He taught His disciples to pray: 'Thy will be done.'" — Elizabeth Elliot

I am learning that "Thy will be done" comes naturally after I delight in the Lord. When I delight in Him, His purposes become more beautiful than my own and His plans an unsearchable thrill. Therein lie the new desires of my heart.

My heart now desires to submit to Him, please Him, and trust Him more. It yearns to be conformed more and more into the image of the Son. "Yet not I, but through Christ in me" has become an anthem of sorts.

I have just come out of a season of intense supplication, and my greatest takeaway is this: if God gave me everything I asked for when I wanted it, I would be ruined. Thank God for the "no" and the "wait."

Each time I stand in the silence that follows my petitions, God reveals my true motives. I am still amazed by how often my prayers are shaped by self-interest.

What I am most grateful for is that God truly desires to partner with me. He lovingly leads me to repentance and then redirects my requests toward what is more aligned with His will.

Thank God for the discomfort of prayer and the work it accomplishes within us. taken in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago by @trini.proverbs31ish

Don't forget the love of your youth.
The love the burned so intensely the mere thought of that person would make you giddy.

Don't let social media or even the vicissitudes of life snuff it out.
Cling to that love deeply and relentlessly.
The spouse of your youth is your gift from God.

It is easy to pray for others but it is hard to pray fervently for them.
It is easy to be good to strangers and leave the crumbs for them.

It is easy to take them for granted and not cherish them.

Nurture what you have been given.
Do it with the account you will need to give to your maker in mind.

"How did you treat my son/daughter?"
"How did you cherish them?"
"Did you endure with them through hardship?'
"Did you pray for the strongholds in their lives to be pulled down?"
"Were you curious about them?"

I hope to say, "Here is your son, I am giving him back to you better than I met him" taken in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago by @trini.proverbs31ish

I had Sunday Afternoon Tea with Jesus 💖, and it was so needed. I thought it was just going to be a little ladies’ tea party mixer event, but I was mistaken. It was refreshing, nourishing, and reviving to my soul.

It reminded me of the power the words I speak have over my mind. What shapes my mind informs my actions, and that impacts everything around me.

It was such a safe space to talk about the negative feedback loops I’ve found myself in, while also celebrating the positive loops in both myself and others.

The group of ladies was so warm, welcoming, and open. Their transparency made prayer come so naturally.

Hands down, the best tea party I’ve been to yet ☺️💞 taken in Santa Cruz, Trinidad and Tobago by @trini.proverbs31ish

Before motherhood, I was a perfectionist. I wanted control over everything — routines, outcomes, emotions, milestones. Then I became a mother, and I quickly realized that perfectionism cannot peacefully co-exist with the unpredictability of a baby.

I spent so much of my son’s first year trying to control every factor possible that I was slowly draining the joy out of motherhood. It felt like I was constantly in a power struggle with his dysregulation, regressions, changing sleep patterns, and growing independence.

And if I’m honest, postpartum broke me in ways I never expected.

I remember the sinking feeling of despair. Wondering if I had made the right choice becoming a mom. Feeling terrified that I wouldn’t do it “right.” Feeling angry with my husband because my body, mind, and entire life had changed while his seemed untouched.

That season forced me into deeper dependence on God than I had ever known before. I had no choice but to lay the full weight of my neediness before Him.

And somehow, in surrender, joy found me again.

A year ago, I never would have imagined I’d say this so confidently: I truly love being a mother.

My son delights me. He humors me, challenges me, and softens me all at once. His dancing, his singing, his curiosity, the way he absorbs everything around him — it amazes me daily. I love being his mummy. I love the privilege of stewarding his little life.

Motherhood taught me that not everything needs to be tightly held to be deeply beautiful. Sometimes joy is found when you loosen your grip, breathe, pray, and learn to go with the flow a little more. taken in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago by @trini.proverbs31ish
