FIRST READ!! / DIGITAL READ!! okay i’m super sorry that it took so long to actually put out a book review on this account. i think reading reading digitally is a challenge because our devices are quite distracting places to keep our literary escapes. there’s just so many notifications and other apps that are stimulating and grab our attention and sort of slow down the process of reading if that makes any sense. okay i’m done ranting about reading digitally… on to the book. i think i love this book for what it is. a lot of black authors and readers have been calling out for black coming of age stories that are absent of deep, unsettling traumas. i think this story has definitely captured young black love, handled a black health issue and there wasn’t a moment where i got this overwhelming sense of black struggle and suffering. i won’t lie, it was so very cheesy and corny and cliché yet intensely sweet. i don’t do well with cheesiness but i think that’s a large factor of YA novels that’s growing on me because of good writers like reynolds. i think i’m more glad than anything that there’s room for black teen characters to be corny and hopelessly romantic like jack. it’s refreshing and so beautiful to read. also, let’s not forget the fact that i love me a good black time travel storyyyyy!!!! i do wish i saw more imagery and descriptive language because i’m just a sucker for things being described beautifully. but overall i think i saw a lot of myself and my boyfriend in jack and kate’s relationship, which is great because we’re supposed to be the same ages. justin reynolds, thank you so much for your contribution to literature. thank you. you are seen. you did something important. the story of jack and kate remains in all of our hearts! taken in Graniteville by @trinitylesliereads
