So, I was walking down the 6th St. Viaduct yesterday, and I hear in an inviting request softly shouted, “Hey, take a picture of me.”
As I spin around, I know it’s the homeless man I just passed. As threatening or disturbing his situation might have been, it all washed away in my realization that he simply felt he deserved to be seen. So, I acknowledged him and took his picture.
As I walked away, I couldn’t help but see the humanity that was mirroring itself to me. His snacks and beer, his little candle for some form of warmth and comfort, him throwing a peace sign, and gentle nature.
That longing to matter, to have a purpose, for someone to care where you might be, the need to acknowledge another human for simply being alive.
Be kind and genuine folks.
