Join me this Friday, 3 October, 5-7pm, at Harper’s EH for the opening:

MAGNUM: Silver Screen presents an intimate portrait of Hollywood’s golden age through the legendary photographers of Magnum Photos. Spanning the 1940s through 1980s, this collection of vintage and contemporary gelatin silver prints captures iconic stars—from Marlene Dietrich, Humphrey Bogart, Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe to James Dean, Sammy Davis, Jr., Jane Fonda, and Mikhail Baryshnikov—both on and off the silver screen.

Magnum’s photographers gained unprecedented access, living alongside these legends on film sets and within their private worlds. The resulting images reveal not just the carefully constructed personas that captivated audiences, but the vulnerable human beings behind the star power—their working methods, quiet contemplations, and unguarded moments.

Beyond the final published photographs, the exhibition also offers a unique window into the alchemy of analog photography itself. Through enlarged contact sheets and Master Printer Pablo Inirio’s extraordinary “Darkroom Print Maps”—test prints marked with his own notations and adjustments—visitors witness the meticulous craft behind each iconic image. These roadmaps reveal how the photographer’s vision transformed into timeless prints, creating a multi-layered exploration where the magic of Hollywood meets the magic of the darkroom.

Curated by Jennifer Tripp featuring fine prints by Eve Arnold, Cornell Capa, Bruce Davidson, Elliott Erwitt, Burt Glinn, Philippe Halsman, David Hurn, Dennis Stock (with additional works available for viewing upon request).

Kindly supported by: Picto New York, Channing Daughters, Finback Brewery

Reception: Friday, 3 October, 2025, 5-7pm

Most studio visits culminate in me taking photos of the works shared, workspace, materials and occasionally of the artist in their element. Yet somehow, once home from my latest visit to the studio of photographic artist @SandiHaberFifield, I realized I hadn’t taken a single photo. How? Full immersion. I was so deeply engaged in deciphering her unique visual language - something that somehow felt simultaneously familiar and unknown - that I neglected to take even a single photo as reference. (I’m sharing a few from her own IG here for reference - they’re beautiful. Go see her work @YanceyRichardsonGallery if the chance arises.)

Her newest works read like puzzles, quixotic brain-teasers inviting the viewer in for a closer look, a deeper understanding. Presented as a photographic work, these 3-D pieces dually function as structural geometric sculptures as well as playfully intriguing imagery. All of her work, photographic in nature, has this duality to it. Each piece uses photography as a starting point, a reference, and is then multiplied by additional planes of information - whether through the intersection of another image at one edge; a hand-drawn mark extending the visual lines beyond the photo’s frame; flat swaths of color running along, behind or across; or holes meticulously punched through the photograph. Even her early works of “straight photography” embody this sense of mystery and complexity via an intricate usage of visual layering within the camera.

In the end, I was ferried away under her influence, my eyes seeing the world through her fragmented lens of shapes, colors, transparencies and solids, and I snapped a single photo of my own across the water (last slide).

Oh the joy of a studio visit! Had such fun yesterday chilling @thechurchsagharbor in @jackie.works light-filled studio. Jackie is one of six current artists in residence through next Wednesday, 18 December. Open Studios this Sunday - go see the fabulous creations playing with ideas of camouflage, line, form, identity, color, space, the real, the imagined, texture and even a bit of trompe-l’œil! So much inspiration and activity humming in that space. #nottomiss #artistinresidence #studiovisits #localartist #community #looking taken in The Church by @tripp.projects

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing and hearing about the work in progress of @jamiediamond at @watermillcenter Open Studios last weekend. What a gift to the artists and the community to be able to walk into such beautiful spaces and interact with the artists as they explore, push and expand their processes and creativity throughout the course of a month-long residency. This is the final week to visit the current artists in residence, so if you haven’t been I highly recommend it!

Captivating moments @clarkart yesterday with @kmgjamesco … It was a glorious fall day and then to be stunned by so many profoundly beautiful art works inside - it was honestly all a bit too much for my heart and mind 😅🥰 But I’ll do it again and again happily. #artlover #naturelover #theclark #botticelli #trompeloeil #louisleopoldboilly #jennyholzer #humanity #fallcolor taken in The Clark by @tripp.projects

Inspiring studio visit with @evafayeart this week. Went to see more of her velum paintings and discovered her paintings on canvas. 💙 The way they glow from within, undulating and shifting light that doesn’t actually exist is remarkable! And I loved her quiet, light-filled space and garden both of which emanated with her graceful calm. Thank you @evafayeart for having us and @biggiwoi for joining me! #studiovisit #ultramarine #art #femaleartists #painting #cutpaper #light by @tripp.projects

Really enjoyed seeing the beautiful works of @amywickersham in the enriching setting of the @jjmlibrary today. Her lines - both those painted and the delicately frayed edges of fabrics - are exquisitely rendered… and the color combinations are equally soothing and oft unexpected. #iloveart #localartist #womenartists #painting #fabric #mixedmedia #gosee #community taken in John Jermain Memorial Library by @tripp.projects
